Best Area to Stay in San Francisco
Curator’s statement

San Francisco is a mecca of culture, architecture and overall cool vibes. Having called the Bay Area home for over 15 years, I’m always captivated by the city’s charm. Whether it's your first time visiting or your 20th, you can’t help but be immersed in the rich history and natural beauty of the city. If you plan on visiting a location that is not only convenient but also close in proximity to the most popular landmarks, I recommend the best area to stay in San Francisco is the Embarcadero.

The Embarcadero is close to many shops, restaurants and iconic landmarks like the Bay Bridge, Ferry Building and Alcatraz Island. Situated in the heart of San Francisco, it provides convenient access whether you prefer a leisurely stroll on foot, cable car ride or those charming taxi bikes, there is plenty to see and do.

Near the Embarcadero, a must see stop is Fisherman’s Wharf. While it's known for its great restaurants serving the freshest seafood, be sure to grab some clam chowder nearby like the Fog Harbor Fish House and enjoy watching the stunning Bay views. Just steps away is Pier 39, a popular spot for watching street performers and observing the sea lions colony that like to hang out on the docks. Near the Embarcadero is the historic Ferry Building, once the city's main transportation hub. Today you can admire the soaring clock tower, beautiful Beaux-Arts architecture and browse the many vendors selling pastries, fresh bread, cheeses and fancy chocolates. Only a ferry away from one of the best area to stay in San Francisco is Alcatraz Island. You can take a tour and learn about the history of one of the most famous federal prisons in the early 1900s housing criminals like Al Capone and Robert Stroud and see where classic films like Escape from Alcatraz and The Rock were filmed.

Another popular location just a 10-minute car ride from my best area to stay in San Francisco is the Marina District, its proximity to Golden Gate Bridge, Palace of Fine Arts and Golden Gate Park make it a great place to relax in the Park and enjoy views of the Golden Gate bridge. Chestnut Street, a stone's throw away, makes it a popular choice for foodie and shoppers alike. You'll find trendy restaurants like De la Rosa Marina, known for its Roman-style pizza and delicious appetizers such as burrata bruschetta and olives.

Another reason to choose the Embarcadero as the best area to stay in San Francisco is its beautiful waterfront location. The iconic Bay Bridge, connecting Oakland to San Francisco looms over the skyline. This walkable area makes it easy to explore on foot and is one of the prime spots alongside Pier 39 to catch the famous Blue Angels performing during Fleet Week. This aerobatic airshow is typically held the 1st week of October, drawing visitors of all ages.
