Curator’s statement

When it comes to all-inclusive, family-friendly luxury, Finest Resorts—part of The Excellence Collection—consistently delivers. I’ve had the opportunity to stay at both Finest Playa Mujeres in Mexico and Finest Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. While both offer elevated amenities, gorgeous suites, and thoughtful touches for families, the experience at each was surprisingly different. Here’s a personal, side-by-side look at both properties—from room categories and kids’ clubs to service standards and beach conditions—to help you choose the right one for your next family vacation.

Arrival & first impressions

Finest Playa Mujeres welcomes you with a signature moment: descending a grand staircase into the elegant central atrium, where the Excellence Collection’s Martini Bar sets a refined tone. Excellence Club guests like us receive personalized check-in and, when needed, thoughtful extras like a hospitality room for a napping baby. These small touches set the tone for a well-orchestrated stay.

Welcome, Playa Mujeres

Finest Punta Cana, in contrast, starts off a bit less smoothly—not because of the resort itself, but because of the chaotic experience at Punta Cana Airport. Think long, hot, non-air-conditioned immigration lines and unclear customs procedures—especially hard on families with young children. Once at the resort, check-in was calm and welcoming in the Finest Club Lounge, but the stress of travel lingered.

Travel pro tip: If you’re heading to Punta Cana, bring snacks, patience, and plenty of water—and expect delays at both arrival and departure.

The suites

  • Finest Playa Mujeres: We stayed in a two-bedroom Finest Club Family suite and later moved to a swim-up suite. The space was expansive and elegant, with excellent sleeping arrangements for families. During a hurricane, our suite offered a true sanctuary—and I deeply appreciated the calm, secure atmosphere provided by the staff. While we didn’t use the swim-up pool due to visible filtration issues, the interior accommodations more than made up for it.

  • Finest Punta Cana: We went big with the Imperial Family Suite with Plunge Pool, the highest category. While the suite itself was beautiful and spacious (a full two-bedroom layout with luxurious bathrooms and a private pool deck), we found the overall service and attentiveness didn’t quite match the elevated price point. That said, the suite perks, like a private in-room bartender and hydrotherapy sessions, were very well-executed (when booked in advance).

Parent perk: Rooms with kids’ sleeping quarters separated by a real door are ideal for maintaining nap schedules or enjoying a quiet adult evening on the patio.

Family amenities & kids’ clubs

Both properties shine in this department—but in different ways.

  • Playa Mujeres has an incredible water play area just for little ones, with slides, fountains, and soft surfaces. The separate kids’ park for older children is equally engaging, and the babysitting services are excellent. Our 1-year-old had attentive care from trained sitters we trusted completely. And the kids’ buffet section at breakfast? Genius.

Playa Mujeres Kids' Club waterpark

  • Punta Cana ramps it up even further with an expansive kids’ club split by age group, a dedicated water park, indoor play areas, and thoughtful touches like changing stations and cribs. The “Blob” (an inflatable water trampoline) was a major hit—though I wish it had been tucked into a more supervised, kids-only area like it is in Playa Mujeres. The setup in Punta Cana put it smack in the main pool, which got chaotic and less safe.

Babysitting win: Punta Cana matched us with a fantastic sitter who stayed with five children during dinner, arranged by our concierge ahead of time. It gave the adults a much-needed break. Though we did have this option at Playa Mujeres, Punta Cana made sure to make us feel comfortable by meeting with the babysitter beforehand.

Dining

Here’s where Playa Mujeres truly outshines.

  • Playa Mujeres offered exceptional dining from start to finish. From the Japanese restaurant to Club-level breakfast and beachside lunches, every meal felt like a step above the standard all-inclusive. They even organized a surprise birthday dinner for me, complete with staff singing and decor. Dinners were easy to book through the concierge and food quality was consistently strong across venues.

  • Punta Cana had solid meals, particularly at the Club restaurant, DOMMO—tomahawk steaks and elegant wine pairings made it our top pick. However, dining quality across other restaurants varied. Beachfront lunch service was slow and overly hot, and the Italian restaurant was forgettable. The teppanyaki dinner was a bright spot, full of flair and flavor.

Verdict: Punta Cana had elevated Club restaurant perks, but Playa Mujeres delivers more consistent quality across the board.

Service & vibe

This was the biggest differentiator for me.

  • Even amid a Category 2 hurricane, Playa Mujeres staff showed up—literally and figuratively. Many stayed overnight to care for guests, kept restaurants open, and ensured our family was safe and comfortable. We felt genuinely looked after, especially by Guest Services Manager Dalal Nasta, who went above and beyond. Her warmth and problem-solving made a huge impression.

  • In Punta Cana, even with a top-tier room, we didn’t feel quite as seen or prioritized. The concierge was responsive via WhatsApp, and the butler was helpful, but the vibe was more transactional than personalized. And while the staff were kind, service occasionally missed the mark—especially in high-traffic areas or restaurants.

Takeaway: Playa Mujeres feels more polished and aligned with the “Excellence” standard in both name and execution.

Beach & property layout

Here’s where Punta Cana struggles the most.

  • Playa Mujeres has a beautiful, walkable layout with scenic views and easy access between areas. The beach is usable and pleasant, though not its main selling point.

  • Punta Cana’s beach, unfortunately, was unusable during our stay. Seaweed, a strong odor, and rough waves made it a no-go—and this wasn’t a one-off issue. From May to July, this is often the case. The property itself also had a strange navigation flow—shortcut paths were missing or blocked, leading to long walks and confusing signage.

Design note: Playa Mujeres has the better layout and far fewer walking frustrations—essential for families with strollers.

Need to know

Final verdict

Despite some construction and an unlucky hurricane, Finest Playa Mujeres emerged as the winner for us—and by a significant margin.

It offered a more consistent and luxurious experience, better food, better service, and a layout that was more intuitive and enjoyable. We felt truly cared for there—even under challenging circumstances—in a way that Finest Punta Cana didn’t quite match, even with our most upgraded suite and every amenity checked.

That said, Punta Cana still holds appeal for large families or friend groups looking for suite-style accommodations, great kids’ programming, and concierge support—just avoid peak seaweed season and go in with realistic expectations.
