Stay Here When You Visit Neuschwanstein Castle
Curator’s statement

I am always on the lookout for off-the-beaten-path hotels and experiences, and this hotel delivers on both! Neuschwanstein Castle is a must-see if you are in Southern Germany, but even more of a must is staying at AMERON Neuschwanstein Alpsee Resort & Spa. The staff, the location, the amenities, and the restaurant ensure you have one of the most spectacular times of your life.

I stayed at the AMERON Neuschwanstein Alpsee Resort & Spa for only one night on my way from Tuscany to Munich—and it was seriously one of the best nights of my entire three-week trip. I am still kicking myself for not planning more time at the hotel and to explore all there is to see in the area.

You might think it is just Neuschwanstein Castle to explore, but no! There is a gorgeous lake right on the other side of the spa wing of the hotel with a walking path, paddle boats, and benches along the way. There are no motor boats making noise or polluting the air, just serene water and crisp air. I started my morning with a small walk by the lake, followed by a short reading session at the oversized swivel bench (highly recommend that spot in particular).

Breakfast was included with the stay, so after my walk and read, I made my way to the buffet and had one of the best buffet breakfasts I have ever had. The coffee was good—as a Seattleite, this is huge! So many pastry options to complement the spread of meats, eggs, and more. Sticking on the topic of food, you must get yourself a reservation at the restaurant when you stay. The food was incredible with seasonal delights—the soup course was my favorite. I could have had that for all three courses. Of course, they had a great beer and cocktail selection as well.

The spa and facilities are top-notch. Both my husband and I got massages and enjoyed the spa area. I only utilized the pool and locker rooms as I had to work before and after the massage, but my husband loved the sauna options—the aromatherapy additions and ice in the sauna were highlights for him. Both massages were excellent—I fell asleep for part of mine and had a great conversation with my therapist (yes, I talk during my massage because I am a notorious massage sleeper and love to yap).

Need to know

There is parking on site for $20 per night. In the same parking lot, buses pick you up to take you up to the castle if you don’t want to walk up the mountain to the castle. I believe the bus is around $5.

Reservations for the spa didn’t open up until 30 days prior, so check on that or ask your agent to book them for you so you don’t have to keep checking or setting your own reminders.

There are a lot of tours that come to the castle, making the entire area very busy during the day. I highly recommend getting to the castle in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds.
