I have created a curated list of the ones that stand out as truly iconic destinations, offering an authentic taste of London’s elegance and charm. Each delivers a decadent experience in settings that capture the spirit of this timeless tradition. These are the places I return to again and again, and the ones I most recommend to my clients, friends, and family for a genuine afternoon tea experience.

Afternoon tea in London, isn’t just a drink — it’s an event.

The Ritz is the grande dame, the place for traditionalists at heart who love a sense of ceremony. If you adore polished silver, formal service, and the feeling of stepping into a classic London postcard, this is your happy place.

Claridge’s, on the other hand, is for those who lean toward effortless glamour. It’s refined yet welcoming, perfect for someone who wants a touch of luxury without feeling overly formal, and its famous blue crockery is a keepsake in memory alone.

Then there’s Sketch. The bold, playful, and a little bit cheeky high tea. Think pink velvet, quirky art, and plates that beg to be photographed. This is where you bring your best girlfriends for a birthday, a hen-do, or simply to revel in a tea experience that’s as whimsical as it is delicious. Probably one of the most Instagram-worthy decors.

The Dorchester

Finally, The Dorchester delivers pure drama. With its regal promenade and palatial feel, it’s ideal for anyone who’s ever dreamt of being treated like royalty for the afternoon. Plus, it’s a fabulous place to people-watch while you sip and nibble like a duchess.

Need to know

Before you dash off to book, a few little insider notes.

Fortnum & Mason is an absolute must for anyone who loves tea—the shop itself is a decadent experience, with sweeping counters of teas, jams, and all the elegant accessories you never knew you needed. They do serve high tea too, but I find it lacks the intimacy of the other spots I’ve mentioned. Instead, I recommend going for the shopping (it’s impossible not to leave with at least one tin of tea) and soaking up the grandeur. Claridge’s also has a shop where you can take home their iconic blue crockery and teas, which makes for a gorgeous keepsake.

My top tip: Book at least a month in advance—these places are wildly popular, and last-minute reservations almost always disappoint. And remember, the traditional time for afternoon tea is between 3 and 5 pm, so plan for a leisurely mid-afternoon treat rather than lunch or dinner. Dress codes vary, but it never hurts to lean a little polished—after all, this is as much about the experience as it is about the scones.
