A different kind of cruise

My eight-day sailing aboard Explora II began in Barbados. After more than 50 cruises, I was in awe the second I boarded the ship.

Traditionally, Caribbean cruising is about the ports, busy beach days, packed excursions, and a rush to get back onboard before sail-away. This experience flipped that idea completely. For the first time, I found myself barely leaving the ship....and not feeling like I was missing a thing.

From the moment we sailed, the ship became the destination. Days flowed effortlessly from slow mornings on my private terrace to afternoons in a private cabana, cooking classes, or relaxing in the spa. My evenings were filled with exceptional meals and live music. There was no pressure to “do” anything, no feeling that I needed to chase the next activity. Instead, I settled into a rhythm that felt more like a private yacht vacation than a traditional cruise.

Room service on the terrace

I always felt the sense of space and serenity. On sea days, the ship was never crowded. Finding a quiet place to read, relax, or simply watch the Caribbean was simple. The pools, lounges, and outdoor decks are intentionally designed for lingering, not just passing through.

Wellness spa

When we arrived in port, the experience was refreshingly unhurried. There was no rushing back to the ship, no fighting the crowds, and no stress. And yet, more often than not, I chose to stay onboard, enjoying the spa, the restaurants, and the simple luxury of doing absolutely nothing. That, to me, is the ultimate sign of a truly exceptional ship.

After eight nights, I was reminded that sometimes the greatest luxury isn’t where you go, but how you feel while getting there.

Need to know

Suites are spacious and luxurious, although bathrooms feature a single sink—something to keep in mind for couples. Showers are large and bathroom floors are heated.

Dining is flexible, but three specialty restaurants require reservations (Marble & Co., Sakura, and Anthology). All meals (except Anthology), beverages (including wine and cocktails), in-suite dining, gratuities, Wi-Fi, and spa access are included in the fare. Entertainment is understated and relaxed, with live music and enrichment talks.

Ports are designed for longer stays and some overnight visits, but many guests, including myself, find themselves spending most of their time onboard enjoying the ship’s pools, terraces, spa, and restaurants. The dress code is elegantly casual, and the onboard community is very well traveled and relaxed.

Bottom line

With nearly everything included, Explora Journeys lets you focus on what matters most: relaxing, exploring at your own pace, and savoring life at sea. Explora Journeys is your invitation to answer it in style.

Whether it’s your first luxury cruise or your next great adventure, now is the perfect time to discover what’s possible beyond the horizon.
