If staying at Plaza Athénée is the ultimate Paris experience, then Bürgenstock is its Lucerne counterpart. Though it was only a quick stop on our Swiss summer holiday, it instantly became the highlight of the trip, and I’m already planning my return in winter.
Perched high above Lake Lucerne, the resort feels like it belongs in a film. You glide across the lake by boat, mountains looming ahead, before boarding the private funicular that carries you straight into the hotel grounds.

Bürgenstock is a legend. For decades, it was a retreat for Hollywood icons and European royalty. Its most recent transformation—a nine‑year, CHF 550 million renovation—brought the property into the modern era while honoring its heritage. Knowing that hundreds of suppliers and thousands of craftspeople worked to revive this icon makes experiencing it firsthand feel even more special.
The Alpine Spa is the heart of the resort and unlike any other I’ve visited. I spent an entire day drifting between the infinity pool that floats over the lake, panoramic saunas, aromatic steam rooms, and serene lounges stocked with books and snacks.

Dining is just as memorable. We had dinner at Seven Kitchens, which serves signature dishes from across the resort’s restaurants. Breakfast at the Michelin‑starred Spices Kitchen & Terrace was a treat: a buffet and à la carte menu spanning the globe, from Chinese congee to shakshuka, always served with a view.
When you want a break from spa life, there’s plenty to do: hiking trails, guided sports and fitness activities, even a cinema. It’s the rare kind of place that delivers total relaxation without ever feeling idle.

Need to know
Even after check‑out, you don’t have to say goodbye to the spa. Ask reception for an access card, and linger a little longer.
