One Coastline, Two Escapes: My Stay at Princess Grand Jamaica & Princess Senses The Mangrove

Here’s what most people don’t realize: These aren’t two resorts you have to choose between. They sit side by side on the same stretch of Jamaica’s northwest coast, about half an hour from Negril and roughly an hour from the Montego Bay airport. They share a long list of restaurants and amenities, and guests can move between them. So the real question isn’t which resort? It's how do you want to spend your days? Let me walk you through both sides, exactly as I experienced them.

One complex, two completely different moods

Think of it as a single destination with two personalities. On one side, Princess Grand Jamaica hums from morning to night with pools, a waterpark, kids and teens everywhere, and live entertainment. On the other, Princess Senses The Mangrove slows everything down: overwater villas, a spa, and the kind of quiet adults book a vacation for.

What ties them together is the shared dining and the ability to cross over, which is why I keep recommending this to multigenerational groups in particular. Grandparents and couples can retreat to the adult side; the family with kids can base themselves at the Grand; and everyone can meet up for dinner. You're not splitting the group across two hotels; you’re all in one place, just living it differently.

This is where the energy is, and it's genuinely built for families rather than just tolerant of them.

• The waterpark has slides and a lazy river that kept kids busy for hours when I toured. This is the kind of on-site amenity that makes the "are we there yet?" worth it.

• The Kids' Club and Teen Club has separate, age-appropriate spaces so younger kids and teenagers each get somewhere that feels like theirs.

• The gaming arcade is a real draw on rainy afternoons or that post-beach lull before dinner.

• The bunk-bed rooms were one of my favorite finds on the tour. Purpose-built family suites with a dedicated bunk setup for the kids, so parents aren't negotiating sleeping arrangements every night.

The vibe here is busy in the best way. If your idea of a great family trip is something for everyone, all day long, this is your side.

Princess Senses The Mangrove: The adults-only side

Crossing over to the Mangrove feels like exhaling. Same coastline, completely different pace.

• The overwater villas are the showstopper, and worth every word of the hype. Think private infinity pools facing the open ocean, glass-floor panels to watch the water beneath you, and large terraces set up for total privacy. There are only a handful of these on the property, so they're a book-early situation; for a honeymoon or a milestone anniversary, they're unforgettable.

• Swim-out suites are my pick for the sweet spot on value. You step from your terrace straight into a semi-private pool, with a furnished terrace and hot tub, without the overwater price tag.

• The Pleasure suites are designed purely for couples, with romantic touches throughout and an intimate, grown-up feel. Lovely for a romantic escape.

• Platinum Club and butler service: For guests who want it elevated, the Platinum tier adds butler service, an exclusive beach club, and private areas. Easy to recommend for travelers who want to be looked after.

If you want romance, rest, and that bucket-list overwater moment without leaving the Caribbean, the Mangrove is the side for you.

Who should book which

After five nights of living in both, here's how I'd steer you:

• Choose Princess Grand Jamaica if you're traveling with kids or teens, you want a packed roster of activities, and "never a dull moment" sounds like a feature, not a warning.

• Choose Princess Senses The Mangrove if you're a couple, a honeymooner, on a friends' getaway, or anyone whose ideal day is a quiet pool, a long spa appointment, and a sunset from your own terrace.

• Book both or one of each if you're planning a multigenerational trip or a big celebration. Put the families at the Grand, the couples and grandparents at the Mangrove, and let everyone reunite for dinner. It's the most graceful solution I've found for groups who want togetherness and breathing room.

Beyond the resort

You could happily never leave, but the location puts you within reach of some of Jamaica's best. Negril and its famous Seven Mile Beach are about half an hour away, and the wider northwest coast is full of waterfalls, boat trips, and local food worth a day out.
