International flights all arrive at Malé International Airport, which is located on the tiny island capital of Malé. But as Malé is an island made up mostly of high-rise buildings, you absolutely don’t want to spend too long here. Since most Maldives resorts are spread across various islands and atolls far from Malé itself, getting to your accommodation involves either a speedboat, seaplane, or a combination of a domestic flight and another transfer. Upon arrival at Malé Airport, you'll check in at your resort's concierge desk, where friendly staff will handle your luggage, organize your transfer, and set you on your way to your island paradise.
Speedboat transfer
If your resort is situated in Kaafu Atoll (often known as Malé Atoll), you're in luck—it's just a short distance from the airport, making a speedboat transfer your best bet. This option is not only quick but also straightforward, typically taking between 15 to 45 minutes depending on your specific island destination. Resorts usually arrange these transfers for you, simplifying your arrival process significantly. Speedboat rides are particularly handy for travelers eager to dive straight into relaxation mode after landing or for those prone to motion sickness, as boats tend to offer a smoother journey than seaplanes.
Seaplane transfer
For resorts a bit further out—like those nestled in the stunning atolls of Baa, Raa, or Alifu Alifu—a seaplane transfer becomes part of your Maldivian experience. Although it takes around 30 to 45 minutes, a seaplane ride feels more like a scenic tour than a simple transfer. You'll be treated to incredible views of turquoise waters, coral reefs, and picturesque islands scattered below. It’s common for seaplanes to make a few quick stops at different resorts to drop off guests along the way. I often recommend that my clients choose resorts that offer a seaplane transfer (unless they experience terrible motion sickness), as this can be the most captivating start to your Maldives vacation.
Domestic flight & speedboat or seaplane
If your resort lies in the far north or far south of the Maldives, reaching it typically involves a bit more effort—but this can be absolutely worth it if you’re looking for a more remote Maldives experience. After arriving at Malé airport, you’ll transfer via a domestic commercial flight from Malé to a regional airport closer to your final destination. These flights usually last between 30 minutes to an hour, after which you'll hop onto a speedboat or, occasionally, another seaplane to complete your journey. Though this route takes longer, it opens up the chance to experience a quieter, less-explored side of the Maldives, giving you a more authentic feel of this island paradise. So while the transfer might be lengthier, the reward is a remote, peaceful slice of paradise that fewer travelers get to experience.

Need to know
Most people think the Maldives is only for honeymooners or couples on a high-end budget. This is a common misconception. There is a huge range of accommodation options in the Maldives, from ultra-luxe to affordable laid-back local islands. There’s also a good mix of family-friendly accommodation, as well as adults-only options. A good travel advisor can help to uncover the perfect option to suit your budget and needs. If you’re looking for an extended vacation, the Maldives and Sri Lanka are the perfect pair. Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, is only short flight from Malé, and is the gateway for a unique side trip. We recommend at least one week in each country, or one week in the Maldives, plus two weeks in Sri Lanka.
