Ruffino gardens

The views alone are worth the trip—endless vineyards, sun-soaked hills, and perfectly manicured gardens surround the property. The eight double rooms, each with a private bath, are thoughtfully designed, combining rustic charm with modern comfort. My room opened directly to the vineyards with large windows that welcomed in the golden Tuscan light. It’s the kind of place where you want to wake up slowly, cappuccino in hand.

Speaking of cappuccinos—the customized breakfast was a true highlight. Everything is tailored to you: fresh eggs, local cheeses, homemade pastries, fruit, and delicious cappuccinos made to order. It’s a relaxed and elegant way to start the day. During the cooler months, breakfast is served inside the Casa in an elegant dining room, while in warmer times breakfast is moved into the courtyard with sweeping views across the property and hillside.

A stay steeped in Tuscan tradition

The estate is home to the historic Ruffino Winery, founded in 1877 in the heart of Chianti. For nearly 150 years, Ruffino has been a standard-bearer for Italian winemaking—famed for its commitment to quality, tradition, and innovation. As one of the first wineries to export Italian wine to the US, Ruffino helped shape global appreciation for Tuscan wines. Today, it remains a leading name, with a celebrated portfolio including:

  • Riserva Ducale Chianti Classico – Their iconic red, known for balance, depth, and structure.

  • Modus – A super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon; rich, bold, and modern.

  • Alauda – A luxurious, limited-production red blend with deep complexity and aging potential.

  • Aqua di Venus – Aqua di Venus by Ruffino is a rosé wine. It's a Toscana IGT rosé crafted from a blend of Syrah, Sangiovese, and pinot grigio grapes, sourced from the coastal Maremma region in southern Tuscany. This Provençal-style rosé boasts a pale quartz pink hue and offers a complex bouquet with notes of wild strawberries, pink pepper, and glacial mint. On the palate, it's fresh, savory, and nicely acidic, leading to a long, persistent finish. Gorgeous bottle and perfect gift or summertime sipping wine!

During our stay, we experienced a fantastic winery tour led by Eleanora, whose warmth and passion made the history and process come alive. The tour concluded with a tasting on the second floor of the winery, offering sweeping views of the vineyards—an unforgettable setting to sip and savor. Winery tours and tastings are available by appointment—and I highly recommend making time for one. Wines and gift items are available for purchase following the tour in the Enoteca Ruffino and can also be shipped worldwide.

Dinner at Tre Rane, the on-site restaurant at Casa Ruffino, is not to be missed. Named after the historic Three Frogs tavern once popular in Renaissance Florence, the restaurant pays homage to Tuscan culinary traditions with a fresh, modern touch. It's a true farm-to-table experience, with a menu that celebrates seasonal ingredients, many of which are sourced from the estate or nearby farms.

From the moment the freshly baked bread arrived—still warm, with a perfectly chewy crust and served with Ruffino’s own olive oil—I knew we were in for something special. Every dish was beautifully presented and full of depth, from house-made pastas to slow-cooked meats and vibrant vegetable plates that truly let the local produce shine.

Of course, Ruffino’s wines are expertly paired with each course, and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable, guiding you through the selections with warmth and ease. One of the things that really stood out to me? It’s not just guests who dine here—Tre Rane has a strong local following. Tuscan locals regularly come for both lunch and dinner, which speaks volumes about the quality and authenticity of the cuisine.

Whether you’re staying overnight or just visiting for a meal and a wine tasting, Tre Rane is a destination in itself—offering one of the most memorable dining experiences in the region. I highly recommend pairing your stay with at least one meal here.

Exciting update: A newly refurbished infinity pool will be ready for summer 2025, making this already stunning property even more of a destination. And for those dreaming of a romantic countryside wedding, Casa Ruffino would make a spectacular small wedding venue with its panoramic views, gardens, and charming ambiance.

Whether for a romantic getaway, a weekend with friends, or a stop on your Tuscan wine itinerary, Casa Ruffino is an ideal base—and an easy add-on to any Florence itinerary.
