Curator’s statement
After spending 17 nights exploring East and South Africa aboard the Azamara Onward, I am honestly not sure I could ever cruise without this level of boutique luxury again. From the moment you step on deck, the highly personalized service and intimate atmosphere make this ship feel less like a commercial liner and more like an elite floating luxury home. Our incredible butler, Roy, took absolutely wonderful care of us, completely spoiling us by making sure fresh fruit plates and shrimp cocktail were waiting in our spacious room every single afternoon when we returned from our adventures on land. The food choices throughout the voyage were consistently amazing, with excellent options always available, proving that this vessel serves as the ultimate anchor for sophisticated travelers looking to seamlessly pair remote global exploration with a quiet, understated luxury aesthetic.

The true magic of sailing aboard the Azamara Onward lies in its intimate scale and unparalleled service. With a boutique layout, the ship accommodates fewer guests, allowing for a level of highly personalized care that simply cannot be replicated on larger vessels. Within mere hours of boarding, the exceptional staff and crew members take the time to know your name and understand your unique preferences, anticipating your needs before you even have to ask. It entirely eliminates the friction of mega-ship cruising, replacing long lines and chaotic crowds with calm spaces, attentive hospitality, and genuine, high-touch relationships with the crew.

The Azamara Onward
What truly separates this voyage from a standard cruise is the masterfully curated itinerary. Our 17-night journey through East and South Africa was executed as a distinct, highly coveted segment of the ship's larger World Cruise, offering a phenomenal way to experience grand-scale global travel in a perfectly tailored timeframe. The Azamara Onward focuses on providing a deeply immersive experience, utilizing strategic scheduling and overnight stays in iconic destinations like Kenya. Instead of rushing back to the ship for an early evening departure, these extended windows gave us the incredible option to leave the vessel overnight for a spectacular excursion to Salt Lick Safari Lodge, allowing us to go on safari through the private Taita Hills Sanctuary and explore the breathtaking wild landscapes of Tsavo West.

Safari day
Our island and coastal stops were true masterclasses in curated exploration. Bypassing crowded tour buses in Tanzania and Madagascar, we utilized independently pre-arranged private charters and local guides. This unlocked an unhurried, premium day on the powder-white sands of Kendwa Rocks Beach Resort in Zanzibar, as well as a flawless wildlife sequence in Madagascar, interacting with friendly black lemurs on Nosy Komba and snorkeling crystal-clear waters of Nosy Tanikely. By contrast, for our stop in Mayotte, we leveraged the ship's official excursion to step onto a group marine charter, gliding across its spectacular volcanic lagoon in total tranquility.

Madagascar
For the ultimate adventure execution, we utilized a highly strategic travel-advisor maneuver: submitting a formal downline request to the cruise line in advance. This cleared the legal and immigration protocols required to temporarily disembark early at Richards Bay, allowing us to leave the ship entirely for an unforgettable, multi-day overland safari at the ultra-luxury andBeyond Phinda Mountain Lodge before seamlessly reboarding the vessel days later in Cape Town.

Our day discovering Zanzibar
Balancing these high-octane land adventures were our restorative days at sea, which became an essential and deeply cherished part of the voyage. Sea days on a boutique liner like Onward are an absolute dream for luxury travelers; they offer the perfect, unhurried canvas to completely unplug, lounge on the tranquil top decks without ever having to fight for a chair, or escape to the Sanctum Spa for world-class treatments.

Pool day
For culinary enthusiasts, the onboard dining is a triumph. One of the absolute standout rituals is having a private breakfast beautifully set up on your veranda each morning with full table linens. For nightly dining, Discoveries Restaurant serves as the main culinary hub, offering a consistently fantastic, rotating menu of world-class selections that change completely every single evening. For an ultra-premium experience, booking the exclusive Chef’s Table takes your voyage to a global culinary peak, featuring a multi-course themed menu flawlessly paired with premium vintages by a dedicated sommelier. For upscale, specialty dinner options, securing a reservation at Aqualina promises a magnificent, multi-course fine-dining journey centered around beautifully prepared, contemporary Italian cuisine, while a table at Prime C steakhouse guarantees incredible cuts and stunning aft-facing ocean views through floor-to-ceiling windows.

This ship is tailor-made for destination-immersed travelers, couples seeking a sophisticated escape, and groups of friends looking to explore the world’s hidden gems without sacrificing premium comforts. If you value deep cultural exploration by day and an upscale, quiet-luxury sanctuary by night where the staff treats you like family, this boutique vessel is your perfect match.

Need to know
Book excursions on day one: Because Azamara Onward prioritizes intimate, highly curated shore experiences, the most desirable boutique excursions fill quickly. If you haven’t booked before the cruise, head straight to the shore excursion desk or coordinate with your travel advisor to lock in your preferred pacing as soon as you board.
Sanctum Spa: The mid-voyage days at sea are the absolute peak windows to book a restorative appointment at the Sanctum Spa. Make your reservations on the first day of the cruise, as sea-day appointments are coveted and can fill up.
Sea days: Don’t over-schedule your sea days. Use them strategically as rest markers between demanding port days.
Specialty dining surcharges: While suite guests enjoy complimentary access, standard stateroom passengers can book specialty restaurants like Aqualina and Prime C for a modest per-person cover charge, an investment that is highly recommended for at least one or two special evenings during your journey.
Pack a smart day bag: On days when you transition to overnight land excursions or prepare for final disembarkation, keep your passport, medication, and essential transit documents in a small carry-on bag.
