Sun, Sand & Soon-to-Be-Three: A Babymoon at the W Fort Lauderdale
Curator’s statement

Fort Lauderdale doesn't get nearly enough credit. People write it off as a budget Miami. It's Miami's more relaxed, less chaotic cousin, and that's exactly why I love it for the right traveler. I did this trip as both a discovery visit and a little babymoon, and the W Fort Lauderdale ended up being the perfect base—great location, genuinely helpful staff, and a price point that makes you feel like you're getting away with something.

Where to stay in Fort Lauderdale

Let me start with what won me over immediately: the staff. From the moment I arrived, everyone was attentive without being over the top. It made the whole stay feel effortless, which is really all you want on a trip like this.

The location is a huge selling point. You're right on the beach, close to the airport (no brutal 45-minute ride after a long flight), and on the main hotel strip where there's actually some nightlife if you want it. That said, the nightlife and dining options are almost entirely contained to the hotels on the strip. The closest town (Las Olas) with real shops and restaurants is about a 15-minute drive away, and, outside of the hotels, there's not much walking around to do. For some of my clients, that's actually a feature—no temptation to wander, just pure relaxation mode. For others who like to explore, just know that going in.

The beach itself was lovely—calm water, beautiful views, genuinely enjoyable. The one downside was the beach chair availability was inconsistent. Some days chairs were hard to come by, and when they were available, many were near the street side with no umbrellas. For a property at this level, that's a miss. If you're someone who spends hours on the beach, flag this with the hotel ahead of time and see what can be arranged.

On the room side, I stayed in the residential suites—and they're very nice, but I'll be honest: There was no wow factor for me in that category. Everything was well appointed and comfortable, but the design didn't feel particularly special or memorable. If you are expecting to walk into your room and have a moment, this might not deliver that. Where the property does shine is in its overall atmosphere—the pools (there are two, and both are great), the energy of the common spaces, and the three on-site restaurants, which cover a solid range from plant-based to a proper steakhouse.

This is very much an adults-first hotel. They have family amenities and they're welcoming to kids, but the vibe skews toward couples and groups who want to unwind. Think romantic long weekend, a corporate retreat that doesn't feel stuffy, or a laid-back bachelorette trip where the group actually wants to relax by the pool.

Need to know

  • The airport is extremely close—this is a great first or last night of a longer Florida trip, or a solid standalone long weekend destination.

  • Dining outside the hotel strip requires a car or rideshare. Plan ahead if you want to explore beyond the property.

  • Ask about beach chair and umbrella availability ahead of your stay—it was inconsistent during my visit and worth sorting out in advance.

  • The resort fee ($55/night) covers beach amenities.

  • Groups get real flexibility here on pricing—resort fees, parking, and even penthouse fees can be negotiated depending on your spend. Reach out to me and I'll handle that conversation for you.

  • Peak wedding and event season runs October through December and books fast. If you're eyeing a fall trip, don't wait.
