Gluten and Dairy-Free Afternoon Tea in London
Curator’s statement

Afternoon tea in London is a quintessential British experience. I have lived in London for most of my life and have experienced many of these beautiful afternoon tea services. However, since I have allergies to both gluten and dairy, tea can be a little more tricky to navigate. Here are my favorite allergy-friendly afternoon teas!

The Ritz

Afternoon tea at the Ritz

The Ritz has one of the most iconic and classic afternoon teas in London. Before even serving the first cup of tea, the Ritz is a feast for the senses. The tea room's decor is visually stunning, and there is frequently live music.

When it comes to the food, guests with allergies might expect to be served alternative dishes. But the Ritz goes above and beyond to provide the same food for those with allergies as for the non-allergy guests. They even created a bespoke clotted cream for me! And no one will go away hungry. The portions are very generous, including beautiful extra cakes for special occasions!

As if that weren't enough to ensure a unique experience, the Ritz is also the only hotel in the UK with a certified tea master and its own royal blend tea!

The Langham

Afternoon tea at Langham

In 1865, Palm Court in The Langham London made history when it became the first hotel in the world to serve afternoon tea. The menu features culinary delights resulting from a collaboration between the legendary Michel Roux and Executive Pastry Chef Andrew Gravett. My personal favorite was the Poached Pear and Vanilla Charlotte.

The Langham is also a fantastic choice for families. Their Children’s Tea is thoughtfully designed to be just as special as the adult version, featuring playful treats like a milk chocolate teddy bear (assuming the children are not allergic).

The Lanesborough

Lanesborough Spring Tea

For those seeking an afternoon steeped in Regency-era elegance, The Lanesborough remains an unrivaled destination. Served in the luminous setting of The Grill, the experience is a masterclass in seasonal storytelling. During the festive months, the hotel transforms into a winter wonderland, currently playing host to a limited-edition Bridgerton Afternoon Tea. Guests can indulge in an exquisite array of themed cakes and scones—accompanied by the "Forbidden Love" cocktail—while immersed in a world worthy of Lady Whistledown herself.

To complete the charm, the weekend service is accompanied by a live pianist, and you may even spot Lilibet, the hotel’s resident cat, wandering through the halls.

Need to know

  • Definitely book in advance. Some hotels can get booked up months in advance.

  • All hotels will require notice to provide allergy-friendly tea services, so do let them know your dietary requirements when you book.

  • Some afternoon tea services will require dress code—check this when you reserve a table to make sure you pack and wear the right attire for your visit.

  • Most places offer a children’s menu for a reduced price.

  • Many hotels will offer replenishments. Definitely take them up on it—you can take a bag home with your leftovers!

  • London hotels offer themed teas depending on the season, so look out for them if that's of interest!
