Before diving into logistics, let’s appreciate what attracted us to Bhutan:

• Nature lovers: Birdwatching, wildlife spotting, botanical tours, exploring national parks.

• Wellness travelers: Meditation retreats, hot spring visits, experiencing Bhutanese traditional medicine.

• Pace of travel: Some clients prefer a fast-paced itinerary covering many highlights, while others seek a slower, more immersive experience in specific regions.

What are your options for local guides?

In Bhutan, independent travel throughout the country is not permitted. Visitors must travel with a licensed Bhutanese tour operator and a certified guide. You will find a variety of businesses offering Bhutan Tours, ranging from locally based, licensed tour operators to hotels and resorts to international travel agencies and aggregators.

If you want a truly immersive and well-organized trip, using a locally-based licensed Bhutanese tour operator is likely the most direct and effective approach. The pros of working directly with a local certified guide include:

• You’re dealing directly with local experts who have firsthand knowledge of Bhutan’s destinations, culture, logistics, and regulations. You have a direct line of communication with the people on the ground who will be responsible for executing the trip.

• You will have more direct control and flexibility in tailoring your itinerary to your specific interests and needs. Everything from all-inclusive group tours to à la carte private tours with your own driver and guide is possible.

• By cutting out the middleman, you can find more competitive pricing, although the daily tariff structure in Bhutan is the same for all operators.

• Supporting the local economy directly: Your booking directly benefits a local Bhutanese business.

Hotels/Resorts often arrange tours and are essential for your stay, but they generally are in the role of a middleman and don’t replace the need for a local tour operator.

Similarly, international travel agencies may seem like a convenient option, but they are also middlemen, and the quality of what they offer depends on the local Bhutanese tour operator they work with.

When a middleman is in the picture, you should anticipate the potential for higher pricing for the same experience, and you may find that they squeeze lower pricing out of local tour operators and guides, resulting in less experienced guides and fewer services.
