Curator’s statement
In July of 2024, I embarked on an 11-day journey in the South of France, including an eight-day journey through Burgundy and Provence with Uniworld River Cruises. This region is beautiful, with rolling vineyards, charming villages and sun-soaked days. Whether you're into wine tasting, exploring historic towns or sampling specialties at a local market, this region has it all. From the laid-back charm of Provence to the rich history of Burgundy, a river cruise in France set the stage for an unforgettable summer adventure.

My Marseille adventure began with a three-night stay at the luxurious Intercontinental Marseille - Hotel Dieu. I received a complimentary upgrade to an executive room, complete with elegant decor and a heavenly bed. After a long journey, the world-class Spa by Clarins rejuvenated me with its thermal suite, sauna, steam room, aromatherapy showers and refreshing pool. Each morning, I savored a complementary gourmet breakfast buffet on the patio, overlooking the vibrant city.

On day four, I embarked on an unforgettable eight-day luxury river cruise on Uniworld S.S. Catherine, exploring the enchanting regions of Burgundy and Provence. Sailing north on the Rhône River from Arles to Lyon, I discovered a world of elegance and comfort.
The Uniworld S.S. Catherine is a pinnacle of luxury, blending exceptional craftsmanship with innovative technology. The ship's opulent interiors, including a two-story lobby adorned with a custom-designed Murano glass chandelier and a life-size glass horse, created a truly magical atmosphere. My French balcony cabin offered breathtaking views, while the handcrafted Savoir® Beds of England ensured restful nights. The all-inclusive experience, with gourmet dining, premium beverages and enriching shore excursions, exceeded all expectations.

From the delicious breakfast buffet to the exquisite four-course dinners featuring regional French specialties and wine, the dining experience was exceptional. The ship's attentive staff went above and beyond, providing personalized service that made me feel truly special.

Each day brought new adventures. From exploring local markets and historical sites to kayaking on the Rhône or cycling through picturesque landscapes, the shore excursions were unforgettable. Highlights included walking through the food markets in Avignon and having lunch and wine tasting at Chateau De Rully, a historic Burgundy estate owned by the same family for 26 generations.
My trip concluded with a night at the Boscolo Lyon Hotel & Spa. Located on the Rhône River, the hotel offers easy access to shopping, dining and nightlife. The room was luxurious and comfortable, and I received a plate of macarons in the room upon arrival.

Need to know
The best time to travel to France is in the spring, summer or fall. Summers can get hot, but the mistral winds blow through the south of France and help keep the air somewhat cooler. Bring layers and a rain jacket as temperatures can vary.
It’s worthwhile to book a tour of the lavender fields if you visit the south of France during peak lavender season (June and July). Many tours will feature visits to the hill towns of Sault and Gordes, which have wonderful small restaurants and shops.
In Marseille, the charming historic shopping district of Le Panier Marseillais features beautiful street murals and designer-owned shops tucked into buildings along narrow cobblestone streets.
Many north-bound Rhône river cruises depart from the small town of Arles. For airport accessibility and to ensure reaching the cruise port on time, I recommend arriving in France one to three days before the cruise and booking a hotel in Marseille, about a one-hour drive from Arles.
