One of the biggest surprises about visiting Key West is that the journey is every bit as memorable as the destination itself. Rather than making the drive in one stretch, I recommend treating the Overseas Highway as part of the vacation. Build in time to linger at scenic overlooks, enjoy fresh seafood overlooking the water, stop for a slice of authentic Key lime pie, and let each island reveal its own personality. Along the way, memorable stops include Everglades National Park, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Robbie's Marina in Islamorada to feed the famous tarpon, Bahia Honda State Park, and the iconic Seven Mile Bridge. Each stop offers a different perspective of the Keys, from wildlife encounters and snorkeling to breathtaking ocean views that make the drive unforgettable.

For accommodations, I stayed at Wicker Guesthouse, a charming property tucked just steps from Duval Street. Its central location made it easy to explore Key West while still offering a peaceful retreat after a day of sightseeing. One of my favorite pieces of advice for clients is to park the car once you arrive and leave it there for the remainder of your stay. Old Town Key West is incredibly walkable, and exploring on foot—or by bicycle—allows you to discover hidden gardens, colorful architecture, local art galleries, neighborhood cafés, and tucked-away restaurants that you might otherwise miss. Some of the island's best moments happen between the landmarks.

One of the highlights of my visit was a full-day excursion to Dry Tortugas National Park and historic Fort Jefferson. The journey across the turquoise waters is an experience in itself, leading to one of America's most unique national parks where visitors can snorkel crystal-clear waters, explore one of the nation's largest coastal forts, and enjoy pristine beaches far removed from the crowds. If this excursion is on your wish list, I recommend reserving ferry tickets well in advance, as departures often sell out months ahead.

Evenings back in Key West were best spent strolling to Mallory Square for the Sunset Celebration before wandering Duval Street to enjoy live music, local boutiques, and outstanding seafood.

This itinerary is ideal for couples, multigenerational families, friends traveling together, and travelers who enjoy blending relaxation with adventure.

What makes Key West unforgettable isn't just its sunsets or turquoise waters, it's the rhythm of the journey. From the wildlife of the Everglades to the colorful communities scattered along the Overseas Highway and the relaxed charm of Old Town, every stop contributes to the experience. For travelers seeking a destination that blends natural beauty, history, adventure, and exceptional dining, the Florida Keys offer an itinerary that feels both effortless and unforgettable.

I encourage clients to spend at least four or five nights so they have time to truly experience the Keys rather than simply passing through.

Also, if you are planning a trip to the Dry Tortugas National Park, the ferries do not operate everyday, so book your tickets early to accommodate your travel schedule.
