Curator’s statement
Hotel Chelsea marries so many things I’m passionate about: travel, music, history and feeling authentically welcomed. It’s the only luxury hotel where I feel I can completely be myself, whether dressed up or in casual clothes with tattoos on display. Every stay feels like I've stepped into the past and it's a living piece of New York’s music, literary and art history.

Our passions are travel and music and my spouse and I entertain these passions in our spare time. By profession, I am a customer experience executive in the financial industry, and for the past twelve years, I’ve been utilizing data to understand how to measure and improve a customer’s experience. On my flight home from New York last year, I found myself reflecting on how the Hotel Chelsea intersects all of these elements in my life. That trip marked my third stay at the hotel in a year, with my first being in May 2023, shortly after they reopened following a decade of renovations. I was charmed the first time I walked up the steps and read the plaque with a tribute to Leonard Cohen.

The hotel has been featured again in recent pop culture. The iconic sign and the hotel are characters in the film “A Complete Unknown”, Taylor Swift recently referenced the hotel in her “Tortured Poets Department” lyrics and it still serves as home to many long-time residents who remain part of the arts community. The residents’ homes are often identified by their uniquely decorated doors. During my first stay, I had the pleasure of encountering one such resident who generously offered us a tour of his apartment and shared stories of his time living there. With over a hundred years of history, the Hotel Chelsea has witnessed the lives of poets, actors, authors and icons of rock, punk and folk music such as Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen and Janis Joplin. It has been restored to what is now considered one of the best hotels in New York.

Post check-in cocktails in the bar
Approaching hotels with a critical eye, honed over years of work and personal travel, I’ve developed somewhat of a sliding-scale checklist for the experiences I expect based on the luxury level of the accommodations I’ve booked. As I walk up to the doors of Hotel Chelsea, opened by a friendly doorman, I am thrilled by the warmth of the tastefully redecorated lobby that reflects the hotel’s history. During our stay over the Christmas holidays, the lobby featured a real, tastefully appointed tree that filled the air with the scent of Christmas past, complemented by a lit fireplace across the room. On my last trip, blooming planters adorned the sidewalk upon arrival.
While my spouse and I may be professionals, we also sport a number of visible tattoos. At other five star hotels, we often feel out of place in such luxury spaces, especially when pulling up on our motorcycles. In contrast, the Hotel Chelsea is a welcoming environment where I feel comfortable whether dressed up for dinner, rocking my red soles or in jeans and Chuck Taylors with tattoos on display.
The rooms at Hotel Chelsea are elegant and beautifully appointed, featuring furniture that evokes a bygone era, blackout curtains, large comfortable beds and luxurious linens. Despite renovations that have altered room numbers and suite structures, the hotel will provide a PDF detailing which suites housed its infamous residents upon request. It is said that the hotel is haunted, however, I am disappointed to report that I've not experienced anything of the supernatural. The comfort of the rooms is such that it’s the only hotel where I prefer to enjoy leisurely mornings rather than rushing out into the bustling city. We’ve even replaced our home towels with the line they use.

Manhattan views from the rooftop spa
Amenity additions to the hotel include the rooftop spa and fitness center. The fitness center, though small with limited weights, offers cardio equipment facing windows with a view over New York's rooftops. The spa exudes chic tranquility, with a sauna and steam room available for use when booking a treatment. The Respira massage is heavenly. Cocktails at the bar are excellent, and Café Chelsea has become a destination, offering a fun place to people-watch.
As someone who has never truly developed loyalty to a hotel and has always sought either convenient or unique experiences, the fact that three out of my last four stays in New York have been at Hotel Chelsea speaks volumes. Its unbeatable location facilitates ease of exploration around Manhattan on foot or by subway, and it’s conveniently located near Penn Station, where we arrive by train from Newark.

The iconic staircase
While I may not know when my next visit to New York will be, one thing is certain: Hotel Chelsea will always hold a special place in my heart as the epitome of a truly memorable stay. Until I can visit again, may the doors of this legend continue to welcome travelers and artists, fostering connections and inspiring new adventures.
