Curator’s statement
Shanghai has always fascinated me with its mix of history and modernity, where centuries-old culture meets futuristic architecture. Staying at Mandarin Oriental Pudong through the Mandarin Oriental Fan Club allowed me to experience the city from a front-row seat, with the Huangpu River and Oriental Pearl Tower just steps away. Each morning brought the skyline to life, and each evening, the city lights shimmered like a living painting. This stay reminded me of why Shanghai is a destination worth exploring slowly, with moments of discovery around every corner.

Location
Staying at Mandarin Oriental Pudong felt like being at the heart of Shanghai’s modern energy. Just steps from the Huangpu River, the hotel offers a clear view of the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower, its pink spheres glowing against the skyline at night. This side of the river is home to some of Shanghai’s most striking architecture and vibrant attractions, from the soaring Shanghai Tower to the stylish Lujiazui district. Everything was within easy reach, with a five- to 10-minute walk to the nearest shopping mall, a quick Didi ride (rideshare) to The Bund for that classic skyline shot, and the perfect position for enjoying both the city’s cutting-edge side and timeless charm.

Rooms
Our Mandarin River View Room quickly became a haven after days spent exploring the city. Spacious and thoughtfully designed, it blended understated elegance with subtle Chinese touches that quietly reminded us we were in Shanghai without feeling overly themed. From the bed, the Oriental Pearl Tower framed the window like a living artwork, its lights shifting with the evening sky. The bathroom was a highlight in itself, featuring a double vanity, a walk-in closet, and a deep, round bathtub perfectly positioned for soaking while gazing at the skyline. The housekeeping team was excellent, with twice-daily service that kept everything immaculate, as well as evening turndown, leaving the room softly lit and ready for rest—a small but appreciated luxury.

Restaurants & bars
Breakfast at Mandarin Oriental Pudong felt more like an occasion than a routine. Each morning, the spread offered comforting Western classics alongside distinctly local flavors. I particularly enjoyed the made-to-order savory congee—warm and flavourful—paired with freshly fried Shanghai pan-fried buns that were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Every dish reflected careful attention to quality and detail, making for a memorable start to the day.

In the evenings, we used our property credit at the Riviera Lounge to enjoy drinks before heading out to dinner. Glasses of champagne and rosé in the relaxed, elegant setting made for the perfect moment to unwind and set the tone for the night ahead. These thoughtful touches elevate even the simplest experiences, making a stay at Mandarin Oriental Pudong feel seamless and thoughtful.

Services
What truly sets Mandarin Oriental Pudong apart is the exceptional service. From the moment we arrived, the staff anticipated our needs with genuine care and attention to detail. We were welcomed warmly at check-in, offered early access to our room, and later provided late check-out, which made our schedule feel effortless. Housekeeping was meticulous, ensuring our room remained immaculate throughout the stay and leaving thoughtful touches that made returning to the room a pleasure. On departure, a beautifully presented box of macarons from the Mandarin Oriental bakery served as a delightful farewell. These subtle yet meaningful gestures create a sense of effortless comfort, making every stay, whether for leisure or business, feel truly special.
