Is Mandarin Oriental Palace Luzern Worth It? Inside Lucerne’s Most Elegant Luxury Hotel
Curator’s statement

Lucerne is one of the most picturesque destinations in Switzerland, and Mandarin Oriental Palace Luzern perfectly captures the elegance of the city. During a recent visit, I was struck by how seamlessly the hotel blends historic architecture with modern luxury, all set directly on the shores of Lake Lucerne. Its location allows travelers to enjoy both the charm of Lucerne’s Old Town and easy access to the surrounding mountains. For travelers looking for a scenic and luxurious base in central Switzerland, it is an exceptional choice.

Where to stay in Lucerne

Lucerne has a way of immediately slowing you down. The lake is impossibly clear, the mountains seem to rise straight from the water, and the city itself feels perfectly scaled for wandering. When I visited Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern, it quickly became clear why it makes the perfect home base. The Belle Époque palace sits right along the lakeside promenade, looking out over Lake Lucerne and the mountains beyond, and the setting alone is enough to make you pause for a moment when you arrive.

Right when I walked through the doors, the view took center stage. The hotel faces the lake directly, with the Alps forming a dramatic backdrop across the water. Inside, large windows and terraces are positioned to make the most of it. During my stay, I noticed how easy it was to lose track of time here. Mornings stretched into an extra cup of coffee, and evenings often meant lingering with a drink while the light changed over the lake.

Balcony views

One thing I especially appreciated is how convenient the location is. Even though the hotel feels calm and tucked along the water, Old Town is only about a 10-minute walk away. I found myself wandering there several times, walking past frescoed buildings, small cafés, fondue spots, and boutiques before eventually reaching the famous Chapel Bridge and the waterfront promenades. The main boat docks are also nearby, where classic lake steamers depart throughout the day. From there, you can explore surrounding villages and mountains without ever needing a car.

Lucerne is also one of the best bases in Switzerland for day trips, something I often recommend to my clients. Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi are both close by and can be reached by gondola, cogwheel railway, or scenic lake boat. My visit was during wintertime, and I spent a full day on Rigi hiking in the snow, visiting a dairy farm, and taking a carriage ride. On clear days, you can head up for sweeping Alpine views or hiking trails above the clouds, then return to Lucerne by the afternoon. Zurich Airport is just over an hour away, which makes arriving or departing incredibly easy.

Inside the hotel, the rooms balance historic charm with modern comfort. Many overlook the lake, and the best ones include balconies where you can sit outside and watch boats crossing the water. One of my favorite moments during my stay was waking up to room service breakfast set up with that view. Coffee, fresh pastries, the lake in front of you, and the mountains in the distance. If possible, I always recommend prioritizing a lake-view room. I stayed in a Junior Suite which is especially nice, with extra space, sitting areas, and larger balconies that make it even easier to enjoy the scenery. I loved the oversized closet space, which allowed me to store all of my belongings without the room feeling cluttered.

Dining here naturally revolves around the lake as much as the rooms do. MOzern, the hotel’s all-day restaurant, is bright and lively with large windows framing the water. One of my favorite dishes there was the famous Rainbow Salad, which is almost too pretty to eat but absolutely worth ordering. Colonnade, the hotel’s signature restaurant, offers a more refined evening experience with modern European cuisine served in an elegant dining room. There’s also a seasonal Japanese restaurant and outdoor terraces that become especially popular during the warmer months.

After a day exploring, I ventured into the hotel’s spa for a quiet way to unwind. Guests can book treatments, relax in the sauna, or simply take a break from travel companions before heading out to dinner in town. Like the rest of the property, the atmosphere feels calm and quietly luxe rather than overly flashy.

Bathroom with double sinks

What stood out to me most about Mandarin Oriental Palace Luzern is how seamlessly it connects you to the destination itself. In summer, the lake fills with sailboats and paddle steamers while hikers and cyclists head into the mountains. In winter, snow settles on the peaks and Christmas lights glow throughout Old Town. Either way, the hotel feels like a front-row seat to one of the most beautiful landscapes in Switzerland.

Need to know

Lucerne is a wonderful destination year round. Summer brings lake activities, hiking, and scenic boat rides, while winter offers Christmas markets and snowy mountain views. The hotel’s lakefront location allows guests to enjoy both the city and the surrounding nature without needing to travel far.

For the best experience, I recommend booking a lake-view room with a balcony so you can fully enjoy the scenery. Lucerne is also an excellent starting point for exploring central Switzerland before continuing on to destinations like the Bernese Oberland or St. Moritz.
