Exploring Sedona in December
Curator’s statement

Having visited Sedona, Arizona, numerous times, my husband and I have come to cherish Sedona in December as our favorite time of the year. As the winter unfolds, Sedona undergoes a magical transformation, the crowds dissipate, and temperatures drop, creating an ideal setting for outdoor adventures and exploration of this geological wonderland.

The red rocks dusted with fresh snow enhance the scenery, while crisp, clear nights provide perfect conditions for stargazing, with stars shimmering overhead. Twinkling holiday lights and roaring fireplaces create a cozy winter atmosphere after dark, offering an ideal experience for a romantic getaway and for families looking to embrace the holiday spirit.

December in Sedona is considered the slow season, allowing visitors to secure restaurant reservations, and sign up for guided tours while hotel prices are lower, making it the perfect time to visit.

What captivates me most about Sedona is its versatility, catering to both adventure seekers and those seeking relaxation. Whether indulging in outdoor escapades or exploring local art galleries, boutiques, or luxurious spas, Sedona offers a myriad of experiences to suit every preference. Our favorite activities include:

Hiking

I highly recommend taking a hike while in Sedona. Known as the “Day Hike Capital of the World”, Sedona boasts over 400 miles of scenic trails that wind through breathtaking red rock formations, ascend high mesas, navigate steep canyons, and weave through fragrant pine forests, with panoramic views. Some of our favorite hikes include:

  • Devil’s Bridge: Visit the largest natural arch in the area where you will find awe-inspiring vistas and excellent photo opportunities. It’s a popular hike – so hit the trail early!

  • Airport Mesa – Offering panoramic views of West Sedona, Capitol Butte, and Wilson Mountain from a flat mesa overlooking the city. A great place to enjoy the sunset and experience the energy of the vortex.

  • Hi Line Trail – Looking for breathtaking vistas? Look no further than the Hi Line Trail! This hike leads you to a long mesa known as "Seven Warriors", offering stunning views of Bell Rock, Courthouse Rock, the Munds Wilderness area, and beyond.

  • Boynton Canyon - Hike to a prominent electromagnetic vortex site to enjoy sweeping views of Capital Butte, Chimney Rock, Courthouse Butte and more.

Spa Day

Treat yourself to a day of revitalization at one of two world-class spas renowned for their unique offerings and tranquil, natural ambiance, leaving you reluctant to bid farewell:

Where to Eat and Drink

Sedona boasts a diverse culinary scene, with options ranging from casual cafes to fine dining establishments. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Redrock Cafe has a great vibe and serves delicious breakfast or lunch options. There is a reason it earned the title of Sedona’s best brunch spot since 2008.

  • Sound Bites Grill is more than a restaurant offering stunning views, live music and a diverse menu. Don’t leave without trying their ribs, known for their melt-in-your-mouth tenderness.

  • Elote Cafe is a foodie destination, specializing in bold flavors inspired by southern and deep interior Mexico. Don’t miss the guacamole or the fire-roasted corn with spicy mayo, lime and Cotija cheese. They don’t take reservations so be prepared to wait.

  • Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill offers a menu inspired by Chef Lisa Dahl’s travels through Latin America, Argentina, sand Uruguay. Savor tapas, lunch, or dinner while enjoying breathtaking views and a delightful ambiance.

Location

Sedona is approximately a two-hour drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. While renting a car from the airport is recommended for convenience, car services can also be arranged.

Optional Self-Drive or Customized Day Trips from Sedona

  • Wine enthusiasts may enjoy a day trip to the Verde Valley Wine Region and visiting the charming town of Cottonwood where several vineyards have tasting rooms on main street in old town. Self-drive or guided tours can be arranged.

  • The Grand Canyon, the largest canyon in the United States and one of the seven wonders of the world is a short two-hour drive from Sedona. Consider a customized tour or a self-drive visit to one.

Need to Know

Sedona in December is considered the off-peak season, offering fewer crowds, attractive hotel rates, and easier access to the city’s attractions. Expect mild December weather, with daytime temperatures averaging around 60°F and nighttime temperatures dipping to freezing. Most days are sunny, and evenings are ideal for cozying up by the fireplace. Sedona typically experiences snowfall about five times a year, which hopefully adds to your visit's charm.

For those in search of a festive atmosphere, Sedona in December is a sight to behold, with twinkling lights, candy canes, garlands, and other festive decorations. It's the ideal destination to fully immerse yourself in the holiday spirit.
