A historic arrival

Our embarkation was more than just the start of a dream trip—it was a truly historic moment. By sheer coincidence, our expedition began on the very same dates that Charles Darwin arrived in the Galápagos aboard the HMS Beagle in 1835. To walk the islands nearly 190 years later, on the exact anniversary of his landing, felt surreal. It added an extra layer of meaning to every hike and every wildlife encounter.

Silver Origin

Southern Itinerary and onboard accommodations

We embarked on the Southern Itinerary, one of the two curated routes offered by Silversea aboard the Silver Origin, the only ultra-luxury ship purpose-built for the Galápagos. Designed in 2020, it accommodates 100 guests and up to 90 crew, ensuring an exceptional staff-to-guest ratio for a deeply personalized experience.

We stayed in the Superior Veranda Suite, spacious, sophisticated, and adorned for ultimate comfort. At the touch of a button, its Horizon Balcony transforms from an outdoor veranda into an interior lounge, offering immersive island views regardless of weather. Butler service, fresh fruit, Ecuadorian amenities, and a fully stocked minibar made it a retreat we looked forward to after each day’s adventures.

Pinnacle Rock at Bartolomé

Dining and Ecuadorian flavors

Onboard dining was a journey in itself. Every breakfast felt like a discovery no two days were the same. The menus celebrated Ecuadorian cuisine, and I still dream about the tigrillo, a comforting green plantain mash that quickly became my favorite morning dish. Another standout was the ceviche de pez escorpión (scorpionfish ceviche), perfectly fresh and bursting with flavor.

Between the two venues, The Restaurant and The Grill, meals became a highlight of the voyage. Whether under the stars at The Grill or enjoying elegant plates indoors, the connection to Ecuadorian roots shone through every dish, giving a true sense of place.

A Captain’s welcome

One of the most unforgettable privileges was being personally invited by the Captain to the Bridge. We had the chance to step into the ship’s heart several times, learning about navigation, maritime traditions, and the operations behind this state-of-the-art expedition vessel. Standing at the Bridge, gazing at the vast Pacific, made the journey feel even more intimate and special.

Immersive on-shore exploration

Every day was an adventure filled with hikes, Zodiac landings, snorkeling, and kayaking. Naturalists guided us through encounters with blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, pelicans, dolphins, sea lions, marine iguanas, and penguins, always enriching the moment with stories of evolution and conservation. Knowing Darwin had walked these same volcanic shores added a timeless perspective to every step.

Evenings under the stars

After days of exploration, evenings onboard carried their own magic. Cocktail debriefings, lectures, and stargazing moments on the deck created the perfect balance of adventure and reflection. With little light pollution, the Milky Way revealed itself in dazzling clarity, reminding us how small and privileged we were to witness this place.

A deeper connection and local pride

As an Ecuadorian, it was profoundly moving to share this treasure of my homeland on such a historic anniversary. The blend of elegance, adventure, and cultural authenticity made this expedition not just a trip, but a story I’ll carry for life.

If you dream of exploring the Galápagos in extraordinary comfort and style, Silver Origin offers an unparalleled way to discover these islands. I’d love to help you plan your own elegant adventure.
