4 Days, 5 Nights in Gibraltar: The Place We Said “I Do”

Day 1: Arrival & Ocean Village

We arrived in Gibraltar and checked into The Eliott Hotel, whose central location proved to be the perfect base for exploring the destination. After settling in, we changed into our swimwear and spent the afternoon relaxing by the hotel's rooftop pool before heading to Ocean Village for cocktails overlooking the marina—the perfect start to our wedding week.

Day 2: The Rock of Gibraltar

Our first full day was dedicated to Gibraltar's most iconic attraction. We took the cable car to the top of the Rock, explored the walking trails on foot, admired the panoramic views stretching across Gibraltar, Spain and Morocco from the iconic Skywalk, and visited the spectacular St. Michael's Cave.

Day 3: Wedding day

On 4 July 2025, we were married at the Gibraltar Registry Office. After the ceremony, we changed into our beachwear and caught the local bus to Both Worlds Beach at Sandy Bay, where we spent a relaxing afternoon by the Mediterranean—it felt like our honeymoon had already begun. That evening, we attended the lively Gibraltar Wine Festival, enjoying live music and sampling local and international wines before ending the day with dinner at Paparazzi Steakhouse, where we had the best jamón and steak of our trip.

Day 4: A day trip to Spain

One of Gibraltar's most unique experiences is simply leaving it. We walked across Gibraltar's active airport runway—one of the few in the world where pedestrians cross an active runway—before entering Spain on foot. We spent the day exploring the local market in La Línea de la Concepción, giving us the opportunity to experience two countries in a single day.

Day 5: Beach day & exploring the town

For our final full day, we returned to Both Worlds Beach for one last relaxing afternoon by the sea before wandering through the streets surrounding The Eliott Hotel. Exploring the boutique shops, cafés, and charming lanes was the perfect way to end an unforgettable trip.

Gibraltar is ideal for couples, destination weddings, long weekends, and travelers looking for a unique European escape. Combining British heritage, Mediterranean beaches, dramatic scenery, and effortless access to Spain, it's a destination that offers far more than its size suggests.

Gibraltar is an incredible wedding destination

If you're looking for a simple yet unforgettable destination wedding, Gibraltar should be at the top of your list. Unlike many countries, Gibraltar has no residency requirement to get married, making it a popular choice for international couples. The process is straightforward, ceremonies take place at the historic Registry Office, and within minutes of saying "I do," you can be celebrating with Mediterranean views, beautiful beaches, or a romantic dinner. We found the entire experience seamless, welcoming, and surprisingly stress-free.

Check visa requirements carefully

Depending on your nationality, you may require a UK visa to enter Gibraltar and a Schengen visa to cross into Spain, so be sure to check the latest entry requirements well before you travel if you plan to visit both destinations.

You don't need a car

One of Gibraltar's biggest advantages is how compact and walkable it is. Most attractions, restaurants, and hotels are within easy walking distance, while the local bus network makes it simple to reach beaches such as Sandy Bay. Electric scooters are also available to hire throughout the city—we even rode them back from the beach on our second visit, and it was a fun and convenient way to get around.

Cross into Spain

Don't miss the opportunity to spend a day in Spain. Walking across Gibraltar's active airport runway before crossing the border into La Línea de la Concepción is one of the most unique travel experiences you'll find anywhere in the world, allowing you to experience two countries in a single day.

Visit the Rock early

The Rock of Gibraltar is the destination's most popular attraction and can become busy, particularly when cruise ships are in port. Arriving early means cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and more time to enjoy the spectacular views.

Pack comfortable shoes

Although Gibraltar is small, you'll do plenty of walking while exploring the town and the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. Comfortable footwear is essential if you plan to tackle the scenic trails and viewpoints.

Allow time to slow down

While many visitors only spend a day in Gibraltar, I recommend staying for at least four or five nights. It gives you enough time to experience the Rock, unwind on the beaches, enjoy the excellent food scene, and even venture into Spain without feeling rushed.

Despite its compact size, Gibraltar offers far more than most people expect. We left with several attractions still on our bucket list, including the Great Siege Tunnels, the Mediterranean Steps, the Windsor Suspension Bridge, and the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park. A longer stay allows you to balance sightseeing with leisurely beach days, sunset cocktails, and spontaneous discoveries, rather than trying to squeeze everything into a single day.
