Curator’s statement
Prospect Berkshires and Belden House & Mews are both winners. Prospect gives you a nature-focused retreat with great design and thoughtful details, while Belden House & Mews offers a chic and food-forward stay in one of Connecticut’s most charming towns. Together, they made for a trip that felt both restorative and inspiring—and reminded me that you don’t always need to get on a plane for a truly memorable escape.

One of the best things about living near New York City is how quickly you can get somewhere that feels like a completely different world. The drive up the Taconic is always peaceful, and in fall it’s especially beautiful with all the changing colors, but really, this is a trip that works any time of year.

Prospect Berkshires
My first stop was Prospect Berkshires, and it immediately set the tone for the weekend. You arrive on a long macadam gravel road, leave your car behind, and hop into a golf cart that brings you to check-in before being escorted to your cabin.
The cabins are brand new, made of knotted pine, and feel both rustic and luxurious at the same time. The blankets are soft and cozy, the views of the lake are stunning, and everything feels thoughtfully designed. It’s a great place to slow down and reconnect with nature.
On property, you can kayak, swim, or warm up in the outdoor saunas (they’re named Fern and Birch, which is a nice touch). There’s also a heated saltwater pool surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, and the whole setting feels lush. Evenings are a highlight—swings, fire pits, live music on weekends, and a farm-to-table restaurant serving excellent food and drinks. It’s a property that works equally well for a quiet couples’ escape or for hosting a celebration with friends. And since it’s still new, I’d say go before it becomes widely known.
The drive
Leaving Prospect, I was reminded of how easy it is to fall back in love with New England. The drive through small Massachusetts and Connecticut towns is charming in every way, and there are plenty of antique shops and little stops worth pulling over for along the way.

Belden House & Mews, Litchfield
In Litchfield, I checked into Belden House & Mews. The property feels fresh, clean, and beautifully redone—it’s the kind of place that makes a great first impression and keeps delivering. The restaurant on site, Mews, is also a standout. I had the pistachio agnolotti, and it was one of those dishes you can’t stop thinking about later.
Belden House & Mews is exactly the type of spot I’d recommend for anyone in the Tri-State Area who wants an easy but elevated getaway. It feels special without being over the top, and it’s a great fit if you want something new and different.
