Curator’s statement
This was my first time in Honolulu—and I was completely in awe. From the moment I landed, the island swept me off my feet. Oʻahu’s natural beauty is truly something else: picture-perfect beaches, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and sunsets that don’t even look real. What surprised me most was the variety—there’s something for everyone. Whether it was the peaceful beaches of Waikīkī, dramatic hikes, or scenic drives, each day was a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. But what really stood out was the island itself: incredibly clean, safe, and effortlessly welcoming. I already can’t wait to go back.

Most days started the same way: barefoot by the beach, iced latte in hand, soaking up that warm Hawai'ian sun with the ocean just steps away. Waikīkī quickly became my happy place—easy, vibrant, and full of life. Surfers, locals, travelers... everyone seemed to be chasing that same relaxed rhythm, and I was more than happy to fall into it. Mornings included a stroll along Kalākaua Avenue or a quick visit to the Honolulu Zoo or Kapiʻolani Park before settling into beach mode.

One of the moments that stuck with me the most? Sandy Beach. Just a 25-minute Uber from Waikīkī, but it felt like another world—raw, wild, and absolutely stunning. The waves were massive, totally unlike anything I’d seen before. Honestly, it was a little intimidating—but I still jumped in. We stayed until sunset, watching the sky turn into a sherbet swirl while the waves kept crashing.
Another day, we rented a car and set off on one of the most scenic drives I’ve ever done. We stopped at the Dole Plantation (yes, I had the Dole whip—yes, it was life-changing), then made our way toward the island’s east side. We hit the Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout for panoramic views, then continued on to Lanikai Beach—an absolute dream with soft white sand and electric blue water. It felt like we’d stumbled into a postcard.
And on my last day, I finally hiked Diamond Head—worth every step for those sweeping views over Waikīkī. Just make sure to book your time slot in advance (I know, first time booking a hike for me, too). Totally worth it.

Sunset, live music, and the best oven pizza and coconut cake at Halekulani Hotel
And oh, the food. I’m still thinking about:
Steak Shaq: A no-frills, by-the-water gem with a line every day—and worth every second of the wait.
The best açaí bowl (I’ll dig up the name if you ask!) that was as refreshing as it was Instagrammable.
The coconut cake at Halekulani: A masterpiece. The pizza is also 10/10, and that is coming from a New Yorker who eats pizza twice a week! We followed it up with espresso martinis at their live jazz bar, because why not lean into the luxury?

Travel tip: January is the perfect time to visit Honolulu—mild temperatures, ocean breezes, and only occasional quick rain showers. It’s great for outdoor activities, from beaches to hikes, without the summer humidity. Don't forget to book your hike at Diamond Head!
