Curator’s statement
Santa Fe is a destination that feels timeless—where art, spirituality, and natural beauty converge against a backdrop of desert skies and centuries-old adobe architecture. My stay at Bishop’s Lodge allowed me to experience the city’s rich culture with both serenity and adventure, balancing luxurious quiet moments with inspiring excursions. This trip reminded me why Santa Fe holds a unique place in the American Southwest: it’s a destination that feeds the soul as much as it stimulates the senses.

Bishop’s Lodge, an Auberge Resort, is a five-star property that effortlessly blends rustic elegance with refined luxury. I visited in the quieter off-season, which gave the entire resort a serene atmosphere, though I still encountered a diverse mix of families, wellness retreats, and small groups of friends on getaway trips. The accommodations are spread across casita-style rooms; depending on your preference, you can walk or take a golf cart ride through the beautiful grounds.

The rich colors of Santa Fe
The spa is housed in its own casita, but the heart of relaxation was truly the pool and jacuzzi area—an inviting space to unwind between adventures. The fitness center, while small, is well-equipped and was often empty, making it easy to enjoy a private workout. Dining on property was excellent though pricey, so I appreciated the easy complimentary shuttle into town, which made exploring Santa Fe’s diverse dining scene seamless (and avoided the hassle of finding parking). Guests should note that an additional $55 daily resort fee is added upon checkout, so it’s worth factoring that into your budget.

Activities and wellness
One of the most compelling aspects of Bishop’s Lodge is its emphasis on curated experiences. Guests can book horseback trail rides, sound baths, water color painting classes, and even silversmithing workshops. These are best reserved in advance, as spots are limited and some carry an additional cost. The programming is perfect for travelers looking to combine creative exploration with physical and spiritual renewal.

Exploring beyond the resort
Having a rental car is essential for appreciating Santa Fe’s surroundings. A highlight of the trip was visiting Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs, where multiple mineral baths (Lithia, Iron, and Arsenic, among others) provide a rejuvenating soak. I recommend arriving early to secure a day pass. On the return, a stop at El Santuario de Chimayó adds both cultural and spiritual resonance, while taking the Taos Scenic Byway back rewards you with breathtaking New Mexican landscapes.

Dining and shopping in town
Santa Fe’s food scene is deeply tied to its cultural roots. At Café Pasqual’s, I enjoyed authentic New Mexican dishes made with local produce—sitting at the communal table was an especially warm and memorable experience. Joseph’s served hearty, elevated comfort food, and the polenta fries are not to be missed. For shopping, the Plaza is a hub of artistry: jewelry from street vendors outside the Palace of the Governors offers unique handcrafted pieces, while Ortega’s provides authenticated Native American jewelry along with artist biographies, ensuring an ethical purchase.

Need to know
Getting there: Santa Fe has a small airport just 15 minutes from Bishop’s Lodge. Alternatively, Albuquerque’s airport is about an hour’s drive.
Car rental: Strongly recommended for exploring the region, particularly if you want to enjoy Ojo Caliente, Chimayó, or the Taos Scenic Byway.
Seasonality: Off-season stays mean fewer crowds and more tranquility, but some activities may run on reduced schedules.
Dining tip: While resort dining is excellent, meals in town are more reasonably priced and equally delicious—take advantage of the complimentary shuttle.
Activities: Book on-property experiences in advance; they’re popular and fill quickly.
Budget note: Don’t forget to include the resort’s $55 daily fee when calculating total costs.
