Grand Resort Bad Ragaz: A Year-Round Swiss Retreat for Wellness, Outdoors & Gastronomy
Curator’s statement

As a Swiss living abroad, I’ve been traveling to Switzerland every year for as long as I can remember. Our time there is usually spent with family or discovering places where locals go, rather than following the classic tourist trail. On our most recent family trip, we decided to visit Bad Ragaz at the end of our ski sessions in nearby areas of Pizol and Arosa, which was the perfect ending to our trip.

Bad Ragaz is a small town about one hour from Zurich, tucked into a valley in Eastern Switzerland and surrounded by mountains. What makes it particularly special is its location: within a short drive, you can cross into Austria, Liechtenstein, or Germany, making it feel surprisingly central despite its peaceful setting.

The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is in the heart of the town. The beautiful Virtuoso property in a historical building, has been famous for centuries as a place people have visited for the thermal waters flowing from the Tamina Gorge at body temperature. While it still carries its reputation for medical rehabilitation and health programs, today, the resort is a refined alpine retreat where wellness, gastronomy, and active living are enjoyed.

The spa experience was one of the highlights of our stay. Moving between the private indoor thermal spa and the larger Tamina Therme, especially in winter, is incredibly special—soaking in warm mineral water in the outdoor pool with the contrast of the crisp winter air. I was also surprised to discover that the resort has a dedicated thermal area for children, allowing families to enjoy the wellness experience together without compromising tranquility for other guests.

Gastronomy is another defining pillar of the resort. With seven Michelin stars (including a Green Star for sustainability), the property is widely respected in Switzerland as a serious culinary destination. We didn’t have a chance to enjoy those restaurants during our stay, but we did try others such as the breakfast, which was exceptional—generous, fresh, and beautifully presented. The lobby bar, where the fireplace, live music, and relaxed ambiance create the perfect setting for a slow apéritif or evening nightcap. One evening, we dined at the traditional Swiss restaurant, Zollstubli, located in a historic building and enjoyed fondue and local dried meat specialties with amazing service.

The property has 247 rooms (108 are currently going through renovations that will finalize by the end of 2026) which are beautiful and spacious; I particularly enjoyed staying in a Junior Suite that was large, with a separate sitting area and balcony overlooking the gardens.

Beyond the property, this destination has a lot to offer year round. In winter, it pairs perfectly with nearby ski areas like Pizol or Arosa as well as the glaciar express from Chur.

In summer, hiking, biking, birdwatching, wine tastings, and scenic train journeys. Golf is also a highlight here, the only place with 27 holes! The property also offers a very unique experience: “4 countries, 4 dishes in 4 hours,” a curated culinary journey through Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, and Germany—a creative day trip that will get you checking countries off your list! 

Need to know

Bad Ragaz is located approximately one hour from Zurich and is easily reached by train or private transfer. Its valley setting gives it a cooler, fresh alpine climate year-round.

While the resort has strong medical and longevity programs, it is equally appealing for leisure travelers seeking balance between activity and relaxation. It is ideal for couples, active travelers, and multi-generational families.

This is a destination best suited for travelers who appreciate wellness, nature, gastronomy, and understated Swiss luxury rather than nightlife or a fast-paced itinerary. I recommend at least a two- to three-night stay—ideally longer if combining it with skiing or alpine exploration—to fully enjoy the thermal experience, dining, and surrounding landscape without rushing.
