Curator’s statement
Rio de Janeiro captured my heart in a way I didn’t expect—the combination of mountains, beaches, music, and warmth from the locals makes the city feel alive at every moment. I spent my days exploring the jungle, relaxing on the beaches, discovering food that tasted like sunshine, and connecting with the rhythm of daily life. Rio is a place where adventure and serenity exist side by side, and every corner has a story. It’s a destination that stays with you long after you leave.

Beach in Copacabana
Rio de Janeiro is one of those rare destinations that pulls you in with its beauty, but keeps you there with its energy, warmth, and soul. My trip blended everything I love most about travel—nature, culture, food, adventure, and those slow, sun-soaked moments that stay with you long after you return home. I split my time between the beaches of Copacabana and Leblon, the iconic hotels that define Rio’s luxury scene, and the lush jungle that surrounds the city. Each day felt completely different from the last, yet all tied together by the city’s rhythm and the genuine friendliness of the people.
Accommodation

Poolside at the Belmond Copacabana
One of the true highlights was staying at and visiting some of Rio’s most exceptional properties.
Copacabana Palace (Belmond) delivers that old-world glamour and impeccable service you can only find in a historic icon.
The Fairmont became my “home base” with its incredible beach views, relaxing pools, amazing restaurants, and the kind of service that makes your stay feel effortless.
JANEIRO Hotel, on the other hand, stole my heart with its boutique charm, clean aesthetic, and perfect location in Leblon—it’s intimate, design-forward, and so beautiful in a way that feels distinctly Brazilian.
For travelers who appreciate style, scenery, and thoughtful touches, these hotels make Rio feel even more magical.

Activities & experiences
Rio is truly a city of contrasts—and that is what makes it unforgettable. One morning I’d be on the beach eating açaí and watching locals play futevôlei (the soccer-volleyball hybrid that feels like a sport and an art form), and by the afternoon I’d be deep in the Tijuca rainforest on a Jeep jungle tour, learning about the region’s history of deforestation and the incredible restoration efforts that brought the jungle back to life. Wildlife, waterfalls, sweeping views—it’s surreal how close untouched nature is to the heart of the city.

Other days were spent riding the cable cars up Sugarloaf Mountain (where you can easily spend half a day drinking, dining, and exploring) and timing a visit to Christ the Redeemer just right—always wait for a clear day, because if the clouds roll in, the entire statue disappears into the sky.

Food & culture
Beyond the sights, Rio’s food and culture became a huge part of the experience. Fresh seafood, amazing steakhouses, addictive açaí bowls, cashew fruit you can almost never find fresh outside Brazil, and caipirinhas that taste like vacation in a glass.
I spent evenings at the Roxy Dinner Show—a lively, colorful celebration of Brazilian music and dance that deserves a spot on everyone’s itinerary.
Wander through Santa Teresa for artisan shops and hillside views, explore Lapa for nightlife (with awareness and caution), and end at Arpoador Rock for what might be one of the best sunsets anywhere in the world.

Who is Rio for?
Rio is perfect for travelers who love a blend of adventure and relaxation—couples seeking romance, families wanting a vibrant destination full of activities, foodies, beach-lovers, culture-seekers, and anyone who wants a trip that feels full, rich, and alive.
Whether you want luxury hotels with world-class service, beach days with fresh food delivered to your chair, jungle tours, iconic landmarks, or simply to feel the pulse of a city that celebrates life every single day, Rio has something for you. It’s a destination that welcomes you with open arms, keeps you present, and sends you home with stories you’ll never forget.

Need to know
Rio is a destination that rewards travelers who come prepared but also willing to flow with the rhythm of the city.
Safety
One of the most important things to keep in mind is safety awareness. I always recommend dressing simply and leaving jewelry, designer handbags, and anything expensive at home or locked in your hotel safe. Petty theft can happen, especially in crowded areas or along busy streets, so keep your phone tucked away unless you’re actively using it and avoid walking through less populated areas at night. When you stay alert and blend in, you’ll feel completely comfortable exploring.
Language
Portuguese is widely spoken, and English is much harder to come by than many travelers expect—especially with beach vendors, taxis, markets, and local restaurants. Even learning a few small phrases goes a long way and is genuinely appreciated by locals. A simple “bom dia” (good morning) or “obrigado/a” (thank you) earns you instant warmth. Google Translate also becomes your best friend for menus and quick conversations.
Beaches
Rio has a beautiful beach culture, but it’s very different from what many travelers are used to. Locals arrive with almost nothing—just sunscreen, a towel, and a little cash. Vendors come to you with everything from chairs and umbrellas to grilled cheese on sticks, shrimp skewers, cold coconuts, caipirinhas, açaí bowls, and beachwear. The beaches are social, energetic, and full of life, and each one has its own personality.
Copacabana is lively and iconic.
Leblon is elegant, quieter, and more local.
Ipanema sits right in the middle with perfect views.
Weather, packing & cultural events
Keep your itinerary flexible, because weather matters here. Christ the Redeemer is stunning on a clear day, but completely hidden if the clouds roll in—you truly cannot see a thing when it’s foggy. Sugarloaf is far more forgiving and beautiful in almost any weather, but I still recommend giving yourself wiggle room to pick the best day for each major attraction. You’ll thank yourself later.
Packing-wise, think light and breathable: comfortable walking shoes, swimsuits, a hat, plenty of sunscreen, and a small crossbody bag you can keep close. A portable phone charger is essential since you’ll take far more photos than you think. And leave anything valuable or sentimental at home—it’s just not worth the stress.
If you have the chance, experience Rio’s cultural side. A soccer match at Maracanã Stadium is electric, even if you’re not a soccer fan. Samba rehearsals and shows (like the Roxy Dinner Show) bring Brazilian dance and music to life in a way that feels joyful and unforgettable. Carnival season is wild, colorful, and full of energy—incredible if you love big events, but very crowded and pricier. Outside Carnival, Rio still dances every night in its own way.
In sum
Finally, Rio is a place where the best moments are often unplanned—a sunset at Arpoador, a street musician on the corner, a caipirinha that tastes like vacation, a new friend you meet on the beach, or a quiet morning walk along the water. If you come with an open heart and a little flexibility, Rio will give you experiences you’ll take with you forever.
