Curator’s statement
I have been to Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve, four times, and I am already planning my next visit. That alone should tell you everything you need to know. This is not just a beautiful resort in Puerto Rico. It is one of those rare properties that gets better every single time you go back, where the staff remembers you, the details feel endlessly considered, and you leave wondering how any hotel manages to get it this right. This place is deeply special to us and I genuinely recommend it to everyone.

There are beach resorts, and then there is Dorado Beach. Set on 50 acres of the former Rockefeller estate, the property has a sense of place and history that most luxury hotels simply cannot manufacture. You get around by golf cart, the pace is unhurried, and, from the moment you arrive, your Embajador—your personal butler—is already anticipating what you need. You can text them at any time, and they check in on you throughout your stay with thoughtful touches and surprises that make the whole experience feel genuinely personal rather than transactional. It is the kind of service that sets the Ritz-Carlton Reserve apart from almost everything else in the Caribbean.
The beach is one of the highlights of the property. The water is exceptionally calm and clear with very little wave action, the sand is beautiful and wide, and the beach chairs are comfortable with attentive service throughout the day. What I love most is that even when the hotel is at full capacity, the beach never feels crowded or hectic. You always have space and you never feel like you are on top of other guests. It is a genuinely relaxing beach experience, which is rarer than it should be at this level.
My preference is to stay on West Beach. Every room is oceanfront and most come with a private plunge pool. The beach is literally a one-minute walk from your room, right in front of you, which makes the whole stay feel incredibly easy and relaxed. The Residences are perfect for families or groups, offering two- and three-bedroom options with private pools and full kitchens, giving you the comfort and space of a home with all the service of a world-class hotel. Both sides have access to your own Embajador, and the experience of having someone looking after you that personally elevates everything.

The dining at Dorado Beach is excellent across the board, and the freshness of everything you eat, including at the beach, is immediately noticeable. COA is my favorite restaurant on property. The food is beautifully executed and the breakfast experience there is a highlight of any stay, with a Puerto Rican breakfast offering that feels both celebratory and authentic. Positivo Sandbar is a must for lunch on the beach, with incredible sushi, ceviches, and handcrafted cocktails with ocean views all around. Encanto Beach Club Bar and Grill is great for casual beachside dining, La Cocina Gourmet is perfect for a quick coffee or gelato, and Flor de Sal rounds out the options with international fare. Positivo also features an omakase chef on select days of the week, which is a truly special experience. My only wish is that more Puerto Rican flavors were woven throughout all of the menus, though, from what I have heard, the hotel is already working on that.
Beyond the beach and the food, the Spa Botanico is extraordinary. Treatments are offered in open-air treehouses surrounded by lush gardens, which makes the whole experience feel unlike any spa treatment you have had before. The facilities—including the sauna, pool, and steam room—are also excellent and worth spending a full afternoon in. The hotel also offers a rotating calendar of experiences throughout your stay, from cooking classes and rum tastings to adventures outside the property. There is always something to do if you want it, and nothing you are obligated to do if you do not.
Need to know
Book as early as possible. This property fills up quickly, especially around the holidays when it is also at its highest price point.
Late summer tends to offer the best rates as it falls within hurricane season. I have stayed during that time and had no issues with weather, but it is worth knowing.
West Beach is my personal recommendation for couples and honeymooners. The Residences are ideal for families or groups who want more space and a private kitchen.
Your Embajador is your best resource for the entire stay. Do not hesitate to use them for everything—restaurant reservations, activity bookings, special requests, all of it.
Ask about unique experiences like private dinners on the beach or in the treehouses. These need to be arranged in advance and are absolutely worth it for a special occasion.
The hotel is about 30 minutes from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, making it an easy and stress-free arrival.
If you are celebrating something special, tell the team in advance. They go above and beyond to make meaningful moments happen and the staff is genuinely invested in making your stay memorable.
