Curator’s statement
La Paz, often called Puerto de Ilusión, is one of the most enchanting cities in Baja California Sur. Known for its charming waterfront promenade, vibrant marine life, and breathtaking desert-sea landscapes, La Paz is a destination that never ceases to amaze me. As Jacques Cousteau once said, “The Sea of Cortez is without a doubt the world’s aquarium.” Here, I’ve witnessed the largest seagulls I’ve ever seen, swum alongside the gentle whale shark, and even watched majestic humpback whales breaching near the horizon. The biodiversity of these waters is unlike anywhere else. If you’re looking for a weekend escape that feels like another planet, without the big resort crowds of Los Cabos, La Paz is the perfect place. The contrast between the golden desert and the turquoise sea is simply otherworldly.

Things to do in La Paz

Isla Espíritu Santo
A UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and a protected national park, Espíritu Santo is one of the most magical places I’ve ever visited.
Swim, snorkel, kayak, hike, or paddleboard among volcanic rocks and hidden beaches.
Snorkel with playful sea lions, spot dolphins, and, if you’re lucky, see the first humpback whales of the season.
Relax on secluded beaches where cactus-filled mountains meet crystal-clear waters, scenery that truly feels like another planet.
On my visit, I even caught sight of blue-footed boobies, making me feel like I was in the Galápagos.
Swim with whale sharks
From October to April, you can experience one of nature’s greatest encounters, swimming with the world’s largest fish. Being in the water with these spotted giants puts life into perspective; you realize how small we are compared to nature’s scale. Tours provide wetsuits and snorkeling gear, so you can simply focus on the awe of the experience.

Balandra & Tecolote Beaches
Balandra is often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world, and I can confirm, it’s a paradise of shallow, turquoise waters perfect for swimming or paddleboarding. Just next door, Tecolote Beach offers one of the best views of Espíritu Santo Island. Pair the scenery with fresh ceviche tostadas or oysters from a beach shack, and you’ve got perfection.

Stroll the Malecón
La Paz’s waterfront promenade is a must, no matter the time of day. At sunset, the bay glows golden and locals gather to skate, cycle, or play beach volleyball. With outdoor gyms and vibrant sculptures along the way, the Malecón stretches for five kilometers. A walk here is both healthy and magical.
Sandboarding
The desert around La Paz hides incredible dunes perfect for sandboarding. Hiking up is the hardest part, but sliding down is pure joy, whether you fall or not. Make sure to wear the right clothes; the fine sand gets everywhere.

Explore La Paz Old Town
Beyond its beaches, La Paz is also the capital of Baja California Sur. Wander its historic center, visit the cathedral, or step into the anthropology museum. At night, the streets come alive with great local restaurants at excellent prices. It’s a calm and safe area that makes evening walks delightful.

Where to eat & drink
La Mentita: Cozy breakfast spot
Hambrusia: Great for casual dining
Doce Cuarenta: Trendy café perfect for coffee lovers

For me, La Paz will always mean an escape to another world. Between the desert and the sea, the marine life and the untouched beaches, this destination remains at the top of my list. Every visit reveals something new and unforgettable.
Need to know
Rent a car: La Paz is spread out, and some beaches are remote. A car gives you the freedom to explore stress-free.
Connectivity: In more isolated areas, phone signal can be spotty, so plan ahead.
Tranquility: Unlike Los Cabos, La Paz offers a slower, more authentic rhythm, where you can enjoy unspoiled beaches and genuine local life.
