Omni Bedford Springs with Kids: The Easy Drive-To Family Escape From NYC & New Jersey
Curator’s statement

Omni Bedford Springs, set in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania, is one of those rare family-friendly resorts that feels like a true escape without requiring a flight, complicated logistics, or a jam-packed itinerary. This historic resort works beautifully for families coming from New Jersey, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., or the surrounding Mid-Atlantic area. I visited on a May trip and quickly realized that while two nights gives you a nice taste of the property, families driving several hours should strongly consider three or four nights. There is simply enough to do: indoor and outdoor pools, hiking trails, UTV tours, golf, spa time for adults, fire pits, history tours, downtown Bedford, and plenty of space to slow down. It is a resort where kids can be active, adults can actually relax, and the whole trip feels like a low-stress reset.

Why this resort works so well for families

Omni Bedford Springs feels like a family resort without feeling like a kid-only resort. That distinction matters.

This is not a property where every activity is loud, themed, or overstimulating. Instead, families get space: wide lawns, historic porches, trails, pools, outdoor adventures, golf carts, scenic views, and a walkable downtown nearby. Kids have plenty to do, but adults still get the feeling of being somewhere polished, peaceful, and restorative.

The resort’s official activity offerings include guided nature hikes, off-road vehicle adventures, archery, and outdoor lawn games, giving families multiple ways to build in active time without needing to leave the property.

The ideal length of stay: 3–4 nights

The resort recommends two nights as a good minimum stay, and that does work if you are nearby or just want a quick reset. But for families driving about four hours from New Jersey or the NYC area, I would recommend three or four nights.

Here is why:

Two nights gives you a taste: arrival, dinner, one activity day, and departure.

Three nights gives you room to enjoy the resort without rushing: pool time, a UTV tour, a spa or golf moment for the adults, and one dinner worth dressing up for.

Four nights is the sweet spot for families who want the trip to feel like a true vacation. You can add downtown Bedford, a slower pool day, a history tour, a chef’s table or special dinner, and still have time to sit on a porch with coffee instead of constantly moving.

This is especially important with kids. The magic here is not checking off every amenity. It is letting the resort rhythm carry the trip.

Getting there from NYC, New Jersey & the Mid-Atlantic

From the New York City and New Jersey area, the drive is very easy: mostly highway, straightforward, and not nearly as tiring as some mountain or rural resort drives.

Once you arrive, the resort is very close to the highway, but it does not feel like a highway property. You pull in and immediately get that grand historic-resort impression: long facade, mountain setting, gracious entrance, and a sense that you have arrived somewhere with a real story.

Valet parking is complimentary through the resort fee structure, and EV charging is available on property. Omni’s official property details note both valet parking and EV charging among the resort services and amenities. During my stay, the team was incredibly gracious about charging my car, which made the return drive much easier.

Room strategy: This is where planning matters

One of the most important things to understand about Omni Bedford Springs is that the property is historic and spread across different sections. Room category alone does not tell the whole story.

There are 216 rooms across multiple categories split between the Historic side and Spa side, and the feel of the stay can shift depending on where your room is located. The Historic side has more of the original-resort feel, while the Spa side is convenient for spa access and hillside views.

For families, this matters because you may want to prioritize a shorter walk to the pool or restaurants, a room closer to the elevator, a specific side of the resort, connecting rooms, a queen- or double-bedded room, or proximity to the spa, lobby, or outdoor areas.

During my stay, I was in a Luxury Spa King in the Spa Wing. The room was spacious and beautifully decorated, with French doors leading to a shared balcony with rocking chairs and chaise lounges. It felt peaceful and classic, and the balcony was one of those details that made the stay feel slower and more relaxing.

The pool scene: Indoor pool, seasonal outdoor pool & new cabanas

The pool setup is one of the biggest family selling points.

The indoor pool is open year-round and was being used by guests throughout my stay. It is especially valuable for families visiting outside of peak summer or during unpredictable weather.

The seasonal outdoor pool is also a major warm-weather highlight. During my May visit, the outdoor pool renovation was just being completed, with eight new cabanas being added. These cabanas are expected to be a fantastic upgrade for families who want a more comfortable pool day. Based on the property tour, the cabanas are rentable for the day and include features like air conditioning, a TV, a fridge, and food service.

This is exactly the kind of upgrade I would recommend for families planning a full pool day. It gives you a shaded home base, a place to cool off, somewhere to store snacks and gear, and a little breathing room if kids need a break from the sun.

Family activities: Enough to do without overscheduling

This is where Omni Bedford Springs really surprised me. It is peaceful, but not boring. There is plenty to fill a three- or four-night family stay.

  • UTV tour: One of the highlights of my visit was the guided UTV tour. The trails are located on resort property, just across the street from the main resort area. We covered approximately 4.5 miles with a guide, seeing overlooks, wooded trails, and natural springs. The UTVs seat four, which makes this a fun family activity for older children or families with kids who enjoy a little adventure. It felt active and memorable without being overly intense.

  • Trails and natural springs: The resort has a strong outdoor component, with hiking, biking, nature walks, and spring-focused experiences. There are more than 25 miles of hiking and biking trails, indoor and outdoor pools, gardens, and fishing in a Gold Medal trout stream. The resort also provides walking sticks in guest rooms, which is such a simple but charming touch. It encourages guests to get outside and explore, even if that just means a casual morning walk before breakfast.

  • History tours: Families with school-aged kids, history lovers, or multigenerational groups should absolutely consider the complimentary history tours. The resort has deep roots dating back to the late 1700s and is connected to the natural mineral springs that made the area famous. The property also has a presidential connection: James Buchanan used Bedford Springs as his summer White House. The historic artifacts and preserved spaces throughout the resort make this feel more interesting than a standard hotel tour.

  • Golf: Omni Bedford Springs is a golf resort, but it does not feel intimidating for beginners. During our golf course tour with pro Jim Woods, he made the game feel easy, approachable, and genuinely fun. We toured historic holes, drove carts around the course, and watched a demo of how he approaches lessons. For families with teens, multigenerational groups, or parents who want to sneak in a lesson or round, golf is a real asset here.

  • Downtown Bedford: Downtown Bedford is a great half-day add-on. It is accessible from the property by trail, or guests can drive and find street parking. During our trip, we visited Bedford Speedway, Bedford Candies, Revellion Books, and Lifestyle Italian Food and Style for lunch and gelato. It gave the trip a nice local layer and would be a great way to break up a longer stay. For families, I love this because it gives you an easy off-property outing without turning the day into a major excursion.

Dining with families

Omni Bedford Springs has enough dining variety to make a multi-night stay easy.

  • Crystal Room: Breakfast in the Crystal Room was a highlight from a practical standpoint. With Omni Select benefits, the buffet option was included during my stay, and there were plenty of choices for different preferences. For families, breakfast buffets are often the easiest way to start the day: Everyone can find something, and you are not waiting forever for kids’ food to arrive.

  • Coffee shop: The on-site coffee shop is very good and convenient for quick mornings, snacks, or a casual start before activities.

  • 1796 and Frontier Tavern: Dinner at 1796 was one of the strongest dining experiences of the trip. We ate in a private room located in the original kitchen of the historic hotel, and both food and service were outstanding. Our group of 16 fit comfortably, making this a great option for small gatherings or special family celebrations. Frontier Tavern is connected and offers a more casual tavern-style option, which may work especially well for families who want a less formal meal.

  • Tilly’s: Tilly’s, located at the golf clubhouse, was a very good lunch option and pairs nicely with a golf-focused morning or a more casual day.

  • Chef’s table: The chef’s table was outstanding and would be a special add-on for adults, couples traveling with grandparents, older kids who love food, or small private groups. In summer, guests can book it individually, or it can be reserved privately for groups of 10 or more. For a family trip, I would treat this as the “special dinner” of the stay if the ages and group dynamics make sense.'

Sample 4-day family itinerary

  • Day 1: Drive from New Jersey or New York City and arrive in the afternoon. Check in, let everyone explore the room, then take a slow walk through the historic public spaces. If the weather is nice, head outside to see the grounds or sit on the porch. Dinner can be easy: Frontier Tavern, 1796, or a casual on-property option depending on the kids’ energy level.

  • Day 2: Start with breakfast in the Crystal Room, then join a history tour or take a self-guided walk around the property. Spend the afternoon at the pool. In summer, this is the day I would consider renting one of the new outdoor cabanas so the family has a comfortable home base. Dinner at 1796 or the chef’s table, depending on the group.

  • Day 3: After breakfast, book the UTV tour for a fun outdoor adventure. This gives the day a memorable “we did something” moment without needing to leave the resort. Afterward, keep the afternoon open: indoor pool, outdoor pool, spa time for one adult while the other handles kid time, or a quiet porch break. Dinner at Tilly’s, Crystal Room, or Frontier Tavern.

  • Day 4: Spend the morning exploring downtown Bedford. Stop at Bedford Candies, browse the bookstore, have lunch or gelato, then return to the resort for departure. If staying four nights, this becomes a relaxed local-exploring day instead of a departure day, which is exactly why I like a longer stay for families driving from the NYC/NJ area.

Need to know

The difference between a good Bedford Springs stay and a great one is in the details: choosing the right side of the resort, pacing the stay correctly, knowing when to add the cabana, booking the UTV tour, planning downtown Bedford, and matching the room setup to how your family actually travels. I’ll help you decide whether this should be a two-night reset, a three-night long weekend, or a four-night family escape—and then build the trip so it feels easy from the moment you pull out of the driveway.
