This is, for me, the hotel’s biggest win. It sits on the Corniche, away from the tourist crush of the Vieux-Port, in a stretch of Marseille that still feels lived-in and local. The beach nearby draws Marseillais rather than visitors, and staying here gives you the sense of being folded into the neighborhood rather than parked in front of it. Marseille as a city can feel a little rough around the edges and occasionally overwhelming—but this pocket of it is lively in the best way: people out enjoying the water, the terraces, the evening light.

True to its Art Deco bones, the hotel is intimate and boutique—small in footprint, but the spaces are used cleverly. I stayed in a Chambre Deluxe Mer, facing the water, and it was a wonderful room despite its size: air conditioning, a small minibar, and a surprisingly generous bathroom with a beautiful shower. The Fontenille-branded amenities carried the same design sensibility through to the smallest details. A few thoughtful touches elevated the stay further—a bottle of the brand's own rosé and a branded tote bag, the kind of small gesture that makes a stay memorable.

The hotel has two restaurants, including a rooftop pool and bar with sweeping ocean views—the perfect spot for an aperitivo, whether solo or with company, as the sun goes down. The menu is small but excellent: I had a wonderful hummus and fresh shrimp with harissa, and the wine—including that same estate rosé—was divine. Breakfast, by contrast, was the simplest part of the stay: a fairly standard continental/English spread rather than anything memorable.

Service here genuinely surprised me. The team was attentive without being intrusive, generous with local knowledge—restaurant recommendations, the right beaches to seek out—and consistently warm throughout the stay.
