Our First Taste of Jamaica at Sandals Royal Caribbean
Curator’s statement

We made our first trip to Jamaica and the Sandals Royal Caribbean resort. The best part of this resort is you also get privileges at nearby Montego Bay so it’s like getting two resorts for the price of one!

Breakfast with a view

Logistics:

Sangster International Airport (MBJ) is conveniently located just 3.5 miles from the resort. Before traveling, make sure to complete the C5-Form, which is valid for 30 days and required for a single entry into Jamaica.

Once you land, you’ll find helpful signage and airport staff to guide you through customs efficiently. After clearing immigration, you’ll head to the Sandals lounge, where you can relax while waiting for transportation to the resort. You can pre-arrange private transportation for an additional cost, or it may be included in your package depending on your booking.

For our return trip, we used Club Mobay, which was well worth it for the expedited security and customs lines, plus a private lounge with snacks and drinks while you wait for your flight.

One last item to note: make sure you check with your cellular provider since international calling can be expensive. Most have plans if you are traveling outside the US.

Tipping:

Sandals resorts include all taxes and gratuities. However, you should carry Jamaican dollars (JMD) for tipping at the airport, staff and drivers, or if you plan any off-site or non-inclusive activities.

Inclusive experience:

Staying at any Sandals resort includes your accommodations, meals, drinks, water sports, entertainment and more. There are add-ons that are available if you are interested such as the spa, a candle light dinner on the beach, photography session, scuba diving or local adventure tours.

Accommodations:

There are 24 room categories and levels including over-the-water bungalows. For the ultimate luxury experience, opt for the Butler Elite service. This includes personalized arrival and check-in, luggage handling, resort orientation, a dedicated phone for easy access to your butler and customized service based on your preferences.

Beautiful view of the resort and Cay Island

Dining: With nine restaurants at Royal Caribbean plus 12 in nearby Montego Bay, you’ll never run out of places to eat. Some of our favorites:

  • La Tavola: A charming Italian spot in the heart of the resort — great for stargazing during dinner. Resort casual attire is perfect here. Expect a few feline visitors, as the resort cats love to hang out near this restaurant! No reservations required. (Dinner only).

  • Royal Thai: Take a boat ride out to the island Cay for an elevated Thai dining experience with beautiful views of the resort. Reservations are required. (Dinner only).

  • Spices: A relaxing spot with views of the water. Buffet-style for breakfast and lunch, with à la carte options for dinner. No reservations required.

  • The Jerk Shack: Located on Island Cay’s beach, this casual spot serves traditional Jamaican jerk cuisine. Perfect for a laid-back lunch.

It’s interesting to note: Island Cay features a small, secluded nude beach with privacy walls. If that’s not your vibe, no worries — it's clearly marked and easy to avoid if you prefer. Most guests won’t even notice it unless they’re looking for it.

Overall, there are plenty of things to do including nightlife games, pool parties, live music and strolling around the beautiful grounds. There’s also a small shopping center within walking distance, and local vendors occasionally set up on the resort grounds for those who prefer not to leave. You might even spot vendors on surfboards selling handmade jewelry or shells right from the water!

Whether you're looking to relax, explore or celebrate, Sandals Royal Caribbean offers a little bit of everything — plus that signature Jamaican warmth and hospitality. We loved our stay and can't wait to return!
