Bisma Eight, Ubud: A Modern Sanctuary
Curator’s statement

Ubud is a place that breathes life back into you, and Bisma Eight captures that magic perfectly by blending Balinese tradition with a sleek, industrial-modern aesthetic. Staying here in the fall felt like discovering a hidden sanctuary; it’s just steps away from the vibrant energy of the town center yet feels entirely secluded within the lush canopy. It is the kind of place where the sounds of the jungle and the warmth of the staff make you feel immediately at home.

Location

Bisma Eight is a stunning boutique property that perfectly balances a deep immersion in nature with modern luxury. Located just one street off the main road in Ubud, it offers the best of both worlds: a peaceful, private atmosphere and easy access to the heart of town. A comfortable 15-minute walk (or a very quick taxi/Uber) places you right in the center of Ubud’s famous markets and temples, but you’ll find plenty of charming cafés and bars along the immediate road to explore as well.

Design

The design of the property is truly breathtaking. It weaves traditional Balinese elements into a contemporary frame, surrounded by incredibly lush greenery. My absolute highlight was the Forest Suite; waking up on a balcony overlooking the dense jungle as the sun rose was an unforgettable experience. Even on a cloudy afternoon, the serenity of the place shines through. There was nothing quite like sipping a welcome drink by the pool while listening to the birds and the wind through the trees.

Programming & dining

For those who value wellness and local flavor, the hotel’s programming is top-notch. I highly recommend the rooftop yoga classes—practicing your flow with a view of the Ubud skyline is spectacular.

The culinary experience is equally impressive, with three distinct on-site restaurants serving incredibly fresh, vibrant food. Copper Kitchen, Bar & Rooftop offers a refined, farm-to-table menu that is perfect for a special dinner, while the Library and the Pavilion provide more casual, yet equally delicious, settings for a midday meal or cocktail. For those wanting a little something different, Mori serves up exquisite Japanese-inspired dishes that are a must-try.

A unique benefit of staying here is the access to their sister property just down the road, which features private villas and its own fantastic dining. You can head over to Embers for a Mediterranean-inspired meal in a beautiful, open-air setting that feels distinct from the main hotel. While some on-site options lean toward a higher price point, the quality of the ingredients, especially the fresh fruit at breakfast, is consistently excellent.

Need to know

  • The tub: The rooms featuring a beautiful Japanese-style cedar soaking tubs are visually stunning and great for a long soak, though they do take up a significant amount of floor space in the bathroom layout.

  • Dining tip: While the on-site dining is delicious, don’t be afraid to wander down the road to local spots to mix things up. I highly recommend grabbing a coffee at Cataria Coffee, having a relaxed meal at Watercress, or checking out Donna and Lokal Bar for great drinks and a local vibe.

  • Inclusions: Your room category can also include activities! The rooftop yoga, cooking classes, and other cultural programs add immense value to the stay.

  • Transport: Walking into town is easy, but for those humid Bali afternoons, local ride-sharing apps work well to get you to the center in under five minutes.
