Curator’s statement
Happy Goat Retreat is one of those places that feels a bit unexpected, in the best way. It’s an easy getaway within Texas, but once you arrive, it feels completely removed from everything else. The experience is a mix of calm and playful, with time to slow down while still having plenty to do. It’s the kind of stay that works well for couples, families, or small groups looking for something different without overcomplicating the trip.

Happy Goat Retreat is set up as a collection of container-style stays, designed to keep things simple inside and more experience-focused outside. The homes are compact but well thought out, with a minimal but functional setup that includes essentials like a microwave, coffee maker, and basic kitchen items, while most of what makes the stay special happens across the property.

A quiet setup surrounded by trees

Simple, but everything you need
What stood out most is how much there is to do without needing a plan. Between the heated pool, fire pits, outdoor games, and shared spaces, it’s easy to move between relaxing and doing something more active. Cooking outside becomes part of the experience as well, whether that’s using the shared barbecue areas by the pool or the individual grills outside each container, or just gathering together in the evening.

Slow mornings, or evenings, up here

A quieter corner of the property

Easy nights, no plans needed
The goats are a big part of what makes this place memorable. You can interact with them throughout your stay, and the property even provides food so you can feed them, which adds a fun and slightly unexpected element without feeling like a structured activity.

The unexpected highlight

Part of the experience
One of the highlights for me was how flexible the experience felt. You can keep things quiet and slow, like spending time on the rooftop or even doing yoga, or lean into a more social stay depending on who you’re traveling with. It works well for couples, but I can see it being even more fun for small groups who want to take advantage of everything the property offers.

Evenings naturally end here
Need to know
The cabins are minimal but equipped with essentials like a microwave, coffee maker, and basic kitchen items, so you can keep things simple if you want to eat in. Planning ahead with groceries can make the stay even more enjoyable, especially if you want to take advantage of the outdoor barbecue areas.
Each container also has its own outdoor grill, which you’ll need to uncover before using.
Because most of the experience is outdoors, it’s worth packing accordingly depending on the season. It can get warm during the day, especially in the summer, while evenings are more comfortable.
The setting is relaxed and informal, which is part of the appeal. You don’t need a detailed itinerary, as the property itself provides enough to fill your time.
