Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel sits at the very heart of Aguas Calientes, making it the ideal base for experiencing one of the world's most iconic sites without any of the stress. Many visitors attempt Machu Picchu as a day trip, but the question worth asking is: Why rush one of the New Seven Wonders of the World? We chose to arrive by train in the late evening, enjoyed dinner at the hotel, spent the following day fully immersed in the citadel, and then took a relaxed morning train back—a pacing that made the entire experience feel special rather than frantic.

It is an experience to cross active train tracks every time you need to go for a meal
The arrival experience alone set the tone for the stay. The pickup service from the train station was seamless—the team handled our bags throughout, accompanied us to purchase our Machu Picchu tickets, and brought us to the hotel without a single moment of uncertainty. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by our host and introduced to Ronald, our guide for the following day, who walked us through exactly what to expect—a thoughtful touch that made the whole experience feel effortlessly organized. Arriving to find a generous pour of pisco sour, truffle chocolates, and a selection of local Peruvian tea to take home was the perfect finishing note to a long travel day.

The hotel's inclusion of breakfast and dinner is a genuine convenience, especially given how limited dining options can be in Aguas Calientes. Breakfast is a particularly enjoyable affair—a cold buffet spread complemented by an à la carte menu, all enjoyed with a river flowing just behind you, a setting that manages to compete with the scenery you came for. Dinner follows a set format of one appetizer, main course, and dessert per person, which is a lovely touch, though vegetarian travelers should note the choices were somewhat limited. Most beverages are an additional cost, so it's worth factoring that into your budget.

Thanks to our Fora Perks, we were also upgraded from a Superior Room to a suite featuring a private plunge pool, outdoor shower, and a daybed—an indulgence that felt perfectly timed after a full day on our feet at Machu Picchu. Returning to our own private plunge pool with that backdrop is the kind of detail that elevates a great trip into an unforgettable one.

Need to know
Inkaterra offers a complimentary pickup and drop-off service from the train station, which is a lovely touch after a long journey—take advantage of it. That said, it's worth knowing that this is not an accessible property. With a significant number of stairs throughout the grounds, it's not suitable for guests with mobility limitations, and I would not recommend navigating it with heavy luggage.
Two nights is genuinely the sweet spot here. Arriving in the evening and departing after a relaxed morning gives you one full, unhurried day for Machu Picchu—long enough to soak it all in without overstaying. The pacing felt just right.
Fora Perks usually include a complimentary massage, but it books up quickly—make sure to arrange it as early as possible upon arrival rather than leaving it as an afterthought. It's a wonderful way to wind down after a big day at the citadel.
