Estancia La Bandada: A Hidden Gem in the Argentine Pampas
Curator’s statement

If you’re spending time in Buenos Aires and want to slow things down a bit, adding an estancia stay is one of those very Argentine experiences—and La Bandada is a wonderful choice. It’s located about 100 km from the airport, near the historic town of San Miguel del Monte, which makes it especially convenient either at the beginning of a trip (to ease into Argentina) or at the end, when you want to avoid city traffic before a flight.

When you first arrive at Estancia La Bandada, you’re welcomed into a common lounge that feels like the heart of a home.

The property & atmosphere

La Bandada is elegant without being showy. The main house has a classic colonial feel, with wide shaded galleries that stay naturally cool and invite you to slow down—perfect for reading, chatting, or just doing nothing at all. The name La Bandada (“the flock”) comes from the abundance of birds in the area, and birdlife is very much part of the experience here.

There’s a discreet pool tucked into the park (great for hot afternoons), peaceful outdoor spaces, and dedicated areas for massages and wellness treatments. Everything feels calm, thoughtful, and unrushed.

I had the pool all to myself.

Rooms

There are only five rooms in total, so the experience feels very personal. Each room is named after a local bird. I stayed in Picaflor, which was spacious, beautifully decorated, and incredibly comfortable—layered textiles, warm tones, a fireplace, and a private patio.

The design is cozy and refined rather than flashy, with Argentine rugs, blankets, and furniture pieces throughout. Bathrooms are generous, with a large soaking tub and yerba mate-based amenities. At night, the only sounds you hear are birds—sleep comes very easily here.

Food & dining

Meals at La Bandada are one of the highlights. The cuisine is best described as comforting, seasonal, and locally focused. Much of the produce comes from the organic garden, and grilled meats play a starring role.

A traditional asado lunch, accompanied by a fresh salad from the garden and grilled vegetables.

We arrived mid-morning and were welcomed with early check-in and fresh mint tea from the garden. Later, we joined an empanada cooking class hosted by Grace, who shared traditional techniques along with personal tips (like adding Malbec to the filling). Those empanadas later appeared as a starter at lunch—delicious.

Lunch was a classic asado with garden salads, sautéed vegetables, and wine, followed by a dulce de leche mousse. Afternoon tea (merienda) came later with pastries and sweets, and dinner was another excellent asado served outdoors, paired with a bottle of Malbec.

Food here is generous, well-prepared, and very much part of the experience.

Great breakfast with honey from the garden, fresh orange juice, and eggs from their very own chickens.

Morning & departure

Breakfast the next morning was a classic Argentine spread, elevated by quality ingredients: fresh bread, house-made jams from fruit grown on the property, pastries, juice, fruit, and good coffee.

Leaving felt a little bittersweet, which is always a good sign. If you’re someone who finds it hard to fully disconnect, this is the kind of place that gently makes you do just that.

The property earned a Michelin Key in 2025.

Need to know

What you can do (or not do)

You can be as active or as relaxed as you like. Options include:

  • Horseback riding across the Pampas

  • Birdwatching (fantastic if you enjoy it)

  • Polo clinics or spectating local practice

  • Cooking classes

  • Poolside lounging with a glass of wine

  • Massages and wellness treatments

I chose a mix of everything—pool time, horseback riding (including a visit to the estancia’s resident llamas and goats), birdwatching, and long walks. My favorite moment was watching the sunset over the lagoon with binoculars in hand—it was peaceful, beautiful, and very grounding.

Day visits & experiences

La Bandada also welcomes non-overnight guests for curated día de campo experiences, with small group sizes to keep things exclusive. Options range from gaucho field days and polo experiences to private horseback rides and birdwatching programs.

Who it’s best for

  • Travelers looking to slow down and truly rest

  • Couples, solo travelers, and small groups

  • Anyone wanting a countryside experience without going far from Buenos Aires

  • Food lovers and nature enthusiasts
