Things to do in St. John

Lime Out

Rent a dinghy from Wharfside Watersports

If you have experience on boats, this is a must-do for exploring the North Shore by water.

Day charter with Island Roots

Another great way to experience the island by boat with experienced captains who will tailor your day toward what you want to see and do.

Tacos at Lime Out

Lime Out is a famous floating taco bar in Coral Bay. It’s a must for your first visit to St. John! Check out Salty Daze Charters to catch a ride out to Lime Out.

Hike Ram Head

This hike is doable for folks of all ages, and the views from the top can’t be beat.

Trunk Bay

One of the busiest beaches on the island, but trust me, it’s worth the hype. Check out the underwater snorkeling trail while you’re there.

Shopping in Cruz Bay

Cruz Bay has many great shops to check out. One of my favorites is Bamboo Studio—their jewelry is high quality and beautiful.

Maho Bay

Spend a day at another one of St. John’s most popular beaches. Snorkel with sea turtles, grab a bite to eat from the food trucks, and enjoy looking at the crystal blue water.

Annaberg Sugar Plantation

Visit Annaberg to learn about some of the sugar plantation history of St. John. You will also take in breathtaking views looking over Waterlemon Cay and the BVI's.

Sunset at Windmill Bar

Get there early to grab a table. Their buffalo chicken dip is a favorite of mine. Enjoy the sunset from one of the most spectacular spots on the island.

Places to eat & drink in St. John

  • Beach Bar: Laid-back, casual bar and restaurant right on the beach in Cruz Bay. Check out their schedule for live music.

  • High Tide: A great spot right on the beach in Cruz Bay for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A popular spot for a mimosa and breakfast before getting on the ferry to start the journey home.

  • 1864 The Restaurant: Be sure to make reservations, as they do get busy. 1864 is a more fine-dining experience—their ribeye is delicious.

  • Woody's: A St. John staple. Looks can be deceiving, but trust me, they have the best peel-and-eat shrimp and drinks on the island.

  • Tap and Still: Best burgers on the island. Simple and laid back, plus great people-watching from the deck!

  • Greengos Caribbean Cantina: If you’re in the mood for Mexican, this is the spot. Their margaritas are delicious, and they have a huge tequila selection.

  • North Shore Deli: A great option for grab-and-go or order-ahead breakfast sandwiches and sandwiches for lunch on the beach.

  • Provisions: Coffee, grab-and-go selections, breakfast sandwiches, smoothies—one of my favorites!

  • Skinny Legs Bar and Grill: A great laid-back spot in Coral Bay. Their burgers are delicious, and the laid-back atmosphere can’t be beat.

  • Surf Club Cantina: Another great spot in Coral Bay. Their housemade chips are some of the best I’ve ever had.

  • Dazey's Bay House: A perfect spot to grab a coffee and pastry before heading to the beaches on the Coral Bay side of the island.

  • Windmill Bar: A St. John must! This is one of the best spots on the island to catch the sunset. Get there early—tables fill up fast.

Need to know

You will need a Jeep while on St. John. My recommendation is to rent from one of the many Jeep rental companies on island. I do not recommend renting from the airport on St. Thomas. Another thing to note is that on St. John you drive on the left hand side of the road. The roads are full of twists, turns, and hills, so driving can be a bit nerve-wracking if you aren’t prepared. Taxi buses run from Cruz Bay to the North Shore beaches if you feel like driving might not be your thing. The Westin also provides a taxi from the resort to Cruz Bay and to the North Shore beaches.

In my opinion, what makes St. John so special is the simplicity of it. There are no chain restaurants or stores, no airport, and no cruise ship docks. St. John has a piece of my heart and every time I leave I’m already planning my trip back.
