Advisor - From the Fairways to the Redwoods: 3 Perfect Days in Carmel-by-the-Sea
Curator’s statement

After discovering Carmel-by-the-Sea with my husband on a weekend getaway, it has stayed with me as one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I've ever been. The cliffside coastline, the redwood giants of Big Sur, Pacific sunsets that stop you in your tracks—it's the kind of place that earns a permanent spot on your travel list. Downtown Carmel offers storybook charm with its historic cottages and local art galleries, while the national parks nearby showcase some of the most dramatic scenery on the California coast. Spend a day on the fairways of a world-class golf course or unwinding at a luxury spa in the valley—the choice is entirely yours.

Day 1: Hike Point Lobos & explore downtown Carmel

Views from the Carmel coastline

To make the most of your first full day, start with a hike at Point Lobos. Just 20 minutes from downtown Carmel, this stunning nature reserve offers easy to moderate trails with plenty of spots along the coastline to take in the views and catch a glimpse of local wildlife.

Head to downtown Carmel for lunch at Stationæry to replenish post-hike. Afterwards, leisurely wander the storybook streets to discover local art galleries and shops. A few favorites include:

  • Somewhere: One of those stores you'll linger in longer than planned. Located next door to Nora's, Somewhere is the place to discover local brands and gifts worth making room for in your suitcase.

  • House of Cardoon: Home goods with genuine flair. Perfect for finding a unique souvenir to bring back with you.

  • Lucy Michel Pottery: A beautiful shop featuring hand-crafted ceramics by a local potter. Worth a visit even just to browse.

After freshening up, head to Mission Ranch Restaurant for a memorable dinner. This historic property, once owned by former Mayor Clint Eastwood, offers sweeping views of the ocean and surrounding mountains as well as sheep grazing in the nearby fields.

Day 2: Tee time & unwind

My son enjoying the views from the green at Pebble Beach.

Carmel is something of a golfer's paradise. From the iconic fairways of Pebble Beach along the coastline to The Quail in Carmel Valley, the options for a top-tier round are abundant. After your round, it's time to decompress. A few favorites include:

  • Refuge Spa: This award-winning hydrothermal facility sits on a serene two-acre property in Carmel Valley. Think Himalayan salt wall saunas, eucalyptus steam rooms, Nordic cool pools, and hot pools with cascading waterfalls—all set against views of the Santa Lucia Mountains.

  • The Spa at Bernardus Lodge: Nestled among the vineyards of Carmel Valley, Bernardus operates on a garden-to-treatment philosophy with customized offerings and complete wellness itineraries. An effortless way to spend an afternoon.

Round out the day with a visit to Folktale Winery for a wine tasting, wood-fired pizza, and live music. It'll be the kind of evening that stretches longer than planned.

Day 3: Among the redwood giants

Enjoying the sunset on the beach is always a trip highlight.

Grab coffee and a pastry before hitting the road—Mad Dogs & Englishmen and Rise + Roam Bakery are both worth a stop. Then head south on Highway 1 for one of the most scenic drives in the world. Pass over the historic Bixby Bridge, pull over as many times as you need to, and make your way down to Pfeiffer Beach. Spend the day hiking through the towering redwoods or exploring the tide pools along the shore.

End where you started—back in Carmel, on the beach, watching the sun sink below the Pacific. Bring a small picnic, find your spot on the sand, and toast to a weekend well spent.
