Things to do on Isla Mujeres

Sipping cocktails while standing in the warm, shallow water of Playa Norte is the ultimate laid-back luxury.

  • Punta Sur is the southernmost point of Isla Mujeres, known for its dramatic ocean cliffs. The morning is the perfect time to hop in your golf cart and visit the point. There are remains of a Mayan temple dedicated to the goddess Ixchel, making it the perfect place to learn about some of the island’s history. After paying $6 per person, you can take the well-paved trails to the point and even down the cliffside to soak in the beautiful Caribbean views.

  • Playa Norte is a must with its laid-back vibe, palm-fringed shoreline, and beachfront bars and restaurants, creating the perfect spot for swimming, snorkeling, or simply watching a stunning sunset. The calm, turquoise waters will feel refreshing after sitting in the sun, and drinks can be delivered beachside, meaning you never have to leave the water.

  • The Isla Mujeres Underwater Museum (MUSA) features over 500 life-sized sculptures submerged just three to six meters beneath the water, blending art and conservation as they evolve into vibrant artificial reefs. The fairly shallow depth makes it great for snorkelers and scuba divers alike. Be on the lookout for colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, and even a few barracudas.

  • Garrafron Natural Park is an eco-adventure paradise blending vibrant coral reefs and the serene waters of the Caribbean. This park has something for everyone: snorkeling, kayaking, ziplining, and a panoramic pool. With admission, guests have access to all of the activities, including a buffet and an open bar to enjoy for the day.

  • A beachside couples’ massage offers the ultimate relaxation, with soothing ocean breezes, the sound of gentle waves, and expert hands. There are many different stands lining the beaches, making it easy to find relaxation. Morning on the beach is the best time for ultimate relaxation, and I suggest picking a stand you like and scheduling an appointment ahead of time, though they also offer walk-up appointments.

Places to eat & drink on Isla Mujeres

Indulging in gourmet burgers at Isla Burger

  • Isla Burger is a tiny rooftop restaurant serving the best burgers on the island. Everything is made in-house, and you will taste the difference. The patties are made of a mouth-watering rib eye and brisket blend, ensuring a juicy bite every time. My favorite is the mushroom burger with a multi-mushroom medley, caramelized onions, emmental mornay cheese sauce, on a brioche bun. My husband prefers to indulge in the BBQ burger, with a 50/50 blend of Yucatan pork and their house beef blend, homemade BBQ sauce, smoked bacon, caramelized onions, and a crunchy ginger-infused coleslaw. Whatever burger you choose, be sure not to skip the amazing Parmesan truffle fries.

  • Oscar’s Grill is a crowd-pleaser, serving up awesome pizza and pasta. You have the option of sitting along the main street, taking in the sights and sounds of life on the island, or harbor-side for a more intimate experience. The seafood pizza with shrimp, lobster, and mussels is a delicious combination of classic pizza and local seafood. If you can’t decide on which pizza to share, you can always get a half-and-half. The garlic knots will be the cherry on top of your visit with their warm, garlicy goodness.

  • La Casa del Ceviche is a hidden gem featuring local seafood delights. Enjoy the fresh shrimp ceviche, Mexican guacamole, salmon and tuna tartare, and the house special, grilled octopus, while taking in the sunset from the rooftop dining area.

  • Tiny Gecko is the perfect place to enjoy your favorite Caribbean cocktail while watching the sunset over the ocean. Margarita Madness Fridays offer the most flavors on the island—you can enjoy a cold drink while listening to the local live music.

  • El Borracho Burro Cantina is a lively spot for drinks, dancing, and much more. You can enjoy a cheap beer, games, music, and even pick up a cactus cup as a souvenir of your time there.

Need to know

Golf carts are the primary and most fun way to get around Isla Mujeres, giving you the freedom to explore every corner of the island at your own pace. Renting one for your entire stay is a must for the full island experience.
