Sardinia was one of those destinations that exceeded every expectation I had. While the Costa Smeralda is often associated with glamorous yachts and luxury resorts, what stayed with me most was the contrast between sophisticated seaside living and the island’s untouched natural beauty. I spent my days exploring hidden coves with impossibly clear turquoise water, wandering the elegant streets of Porto Cervo, and enjoying long lunches and sunset dinners overlooking the Mediterranean. Whether you’re seeking a quiet beach escape, a romantic coastal getaway, or a stop along a larger Mediterranean journey, Sardinia delivers a rare blend of relaxation, beauty, and understated luxury. One of my favorite parts of Sardinia was slowing down and enjoying the stunning waterfront setting at Hotel Don Diego. The calm waters and peaceful atmosphere make it the perfect place to settle into island life from the moment you arrive.

Some of my favorite moments weren’t tied to a specific landmark at all. The northern coastline is filled with secluded rocky coves, turquoise swimming spots, and scenic overlooks that reward travelers willing to explore beyond the main beaches.
Spend the day at La Cinta Beach
La Cinta quickly became one of my favorite beaches on the island. The combination of powdery white sand and crystal-clear water creates a setting that feels almost tropical. It’s the kind of place where you arrive intending to stay for an hour and end up spending the entire afternoon.

Located along La Cinta Beach, Beach Club Bar is the perfect place to pause between swims and soak in the relaxed Sardinian atmosphere. With beautiful beach views and a laid-back vibe, it’s an ideal spot for a leisurely afternoon drink.

Porto Cervo is the heart of Costa Smeralda’s luxury scene. I loved strolling through the elegant piazzas, browsing designer boutiques, and admiring the impressive yachts moored in the marina.

Sunset in Sardinia has a way of transforming the landscape. Whether you’re overlooking the sea from Porto Cervo or enjoying dinner with a coastal view, the golden light creates some of the most memorable moments of the trip.

Ristorante Antica Trattoria (Olbia)
My first dinner in Sardinia was here, and it set the tone for the entire trip. Expect authentic Sardinian cuisine, fresh local ingredients, and a warm atmosphere that feels distinctly local.
Trattoria Pappa e Ciccia (Santa Teresa Gallura)
A wonderful lunch stop after exploring the northern coast. The relaxed atmosphere, fresh seafood, and traditional Sardinian dishes make it a favorite among both locals and visitors.
Ristorante Pedrinelli (Porto Cervo)
One of the highlights of my time in Costa Smeralda. Enjoying an al fresco dinner here as the sun began to set was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Porto Cervo.

Ideal for a casual beachfront lunch, aperitivo, or afternoon cocktail while enjoying views of one of Sardinia’s most beautiful beaches.
Need to know
Rent a car
One of the best decisions you can make in Sardinia is renting a car. Many of the island’s most beautiful beaches, hidden coves, and coastal viewpoints are best reached independently, and having your own vehicle gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace. I recommend reserving a compact car, as some of the coastal roads and parking areas can be quite narrow.
Visit in June or September
For the best balance of weather, value, and atmosphere, I recommend visiting in June or September. You’ll enjoy warm temperatures, vibrant beach clubs, and significantly fewer crowds than the peak summer months of July and August. While May and October can also be lovely, some seasonal restaurants and beach venues may have limited hours or be closed.
Try the local wines
Sardinia produces some exceptional wines that deserve a place on every table. Vermentino di Gallura is a crisp, refreshing white that pairs beautifully with seafood, while Cannonau, Sardinia’s signature red, complements grilled meats and traditional island cuisine perfectly.
Pack more than flip flops
Many of Sardinia’s most beautiful beaches require a short walk from the parking area, often along rocky paths or uneven terrain. Comfortable sandals or sneakers will make exploring much easier and allow you to discover some of the island’s most rewarding coastal spots.
