Curator’s statement

Tulum is one of those rare places that feels both grounding and otherworldly. The energy here is rich with history, beauty, and spirit—you can feel it standing atop ancient Mayan ruins overlooking the sea or deep in the jungle during a traditional Temazcal ceremony, where the heat and rhythm of the chants seem to crack something open inside you. Whether you’re swimming in a cenote, wandering through town, or watching the sun sink behind the treetops from a rooftop bar, Tulum invites you to slow down, breathe deeper, and reconnect with what truly matters. It’s more than a destination—it’s a feeling that lingers long after you’ve left.

Things to do in Tulum

Swim in the Cenotes

There’s a sacred stillness when you swim in the cenotes of Tulum—it's as if time slows down just for you. As I slipped into the crystal-clear waters of Gran Cenote, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace wash over me. The water was cool and refreshing, the light filtering through the trees above casting a magical glow. It’s hard to explain, but it’s a moment of pure connection with nature. Floating in these ancient, sacred pools feels like being a part of something timeless, something bigger than yourself.

Explore the Tulum Ruins

Standing at the edge of the Tulum Ruins, I felt the energy of the ancient Mayans in every stone. The ruins sit perched above the Caribbean, offering not just stunning views, but a deep sense of history. Walking among the centuries-old structures, I couldn’t help but imagine what life might have been like for those who once lived here. The air feels charged with a kind of reverence, and with every step, you can’t help but feel your own connection to the land. Arriving early before the crowds gave me the chance to experience it in solitude, the breeze from the sea brushing against my skin as the sun slowly rose in the sky.

Experience a Temazcal Ceremony

I had heard about the Temazcal ceremony before, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how profoundly it would affect me. As I entered the steam-filled hut, I could already feel the energy shifting. The heat enveloped me, and the chanting began—slow and rhythmic, pulling me deeper into the experience. The ceremony is about purification, about letting go of everything that no longer serves you. The sweat on my skin was symbolic of the release, of shedding old energy and emerging renewed. It’s not something you just “do”—it’s an experience that stays with you, one that opens you up to a new sense of clarity.

Visit Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

Sian Ka’an feels untouched by the modern world, like stepping into a sanctuary of pure, raw nature. Kayaking through the mangroves, I felt so small against the grandeur of the reserve—surrounded by water, dense jungle, and the occasional dolphin or sea turtle gliding past. There’s a serenity here that’s hard to put into words. As I paddled deeper into the reserve, it was as if the world disappeared, leaving only the sound of my oars and the occasional bird call. It’s the kind of place that makes you realize how deeply connected we are to the earth, and how precious these natural spaces are.

Stroll Through Tulum Town (Pueblo)

Tulum Town is where you can really feel the soul of the place. The bustling streets, filled with colorful shops and local markets, have a vibrancy that’s hard to ignore. I remember wandering into a tiny artisan shop, the air thick with the scent of incense and the sound of soft music in the background. The owner, a local artist, told me about the pieces she created, each one inspired by the jungle. Tulum’s town center has a more grounded, authentic energy compared to the beach zone. It’s where you can connect with the local culture, sample tacos from a hole-in-the-wall joint, and discover little treasures you won’t find anywhere else.

Rent a Bike and Cruise the Beach Road

Biking along the beachfront road in Tulum felt like a slow dance with the landscape. The breeze in my hair, the salty air, the sound of the jungle blending with the soft rhythm of the ocean—it’s the perfect way to soak in everything the area has to offer. As I pedaled past beach clubs, art installations, and restaurants, it felt like the world was moving at a different pace, one where the only goal was to be present. There’s a freedom in it, a lightness that matches Tulum’s laid-back spirit.

Catch Sunset at a Rooftop Bar

There’s something indescribably magical about watching the sun sink below the horizon in Tulum. From the rooftop bars, it’s as if the whole world fades away and all that’s left is the shifting colors of the sky. I remember sitting at Azulik’s Kin Toh, mezcal in hand, the jungle below humming with life. The sun turned everything golden, casting long shadows as the sounds of the city softened into the quiet of the night. It’s the kind of moment that lingers with you long after you leave, like a quiet reminder of the beauty of the present.

Places to eat & drink in Tulum

Gotta Visit!! Matcha Mama (photo used with permission)

Hartwood

Nestled in the heart of Tulum, Hartwood is more than just a place to eat—it’s an experience. As soon as you step in, you’re greeted by the warm, smoky aroma of wood-fired dishes being prepared in the open kitchen. The menu changes daily, depending on what’s fresh, and you can taste the care in every dish. I remember sitting at a candle-lit table under the stars, with the soft strumming of live music in the background, feeling completely transported. It was the kind of meal where the food, atmosphere, and company all aligned perfectly.

Raw Love Café

Raw Love Café is tucked away in a jungle nook near the beach, and it immediately gives you that relaxed, barefoot vibe. I had one of the best coconut lattes there after a morning yoga session, while listening to the gentle sounds of the jungle around me. The smoothie bowls are packed with tropical goodness, and I couldn’t resist the raw vegan treats. It’s one of those places where you can take your time—sipping on something refreshing and just taking in the peaceful atmosphere, all while the breeze softly rustles the palm trees.

Arca

Arca is a perfect blend of upscale elegance and jungle charm. As soon as we were seated, a waiter with a warm smile recommended their signature cocktails, and we sipped them as the sun dipped below the trees, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. The creative, locally-inspired dishes felt like a celebration of Mexico’s flavors, and the romantic ambiance made it the perfect place for a sunset dinner date. With the twinkling lights and soft jungle music surrounding us, I couldn’t help but feel like I was in the heart of something special.

Taquería Honorio

For an authentic, local experience, Taquería Honorio is a must. The taquería is tucked away off the main road, and doesn’t look like much from the outside, but it’s loved by locals—and now, by me too! I remember sitting with a cold agua fresca, chatting with the friendly waiter as he brought over a plate of cochinita pibil tacos. The flavors were unreal—tender pork with the perfect balance of spice and sweetness. There was no music playing here, just the hum of conversation and the clinking of plates, giving it a truly local, unpretentious vibe.

Gitano Tulum

Gitano Tulum is where the night comes alive. The lush jungle setting creates the perfect backdrop for sipping mezcal cocktails, and the energy is vibrant yet laid-back. I found myself sitting in a cozy outdoor lounge, a drink in hand, with the DJ playing smooth beats that perfectly complemented the evening. The food was exquisite, but it was the atmosphere that made it unforgettable—an intoxicating mix of music, lights, and laughter that made me feel like I was part of something bigger. If you’re looking for an energetic night out, this is the place to be.

Matcha Mama

If you love green smoothies, Matcha Mama is a must-visit! I stopped by after a refreshing morning dip in a cenote, and it quickly became my go-to spot. The vibrant matcha-based drinks and acai bowls were the perfect way to recharge. The staff was incredibly friendly, and we chatted for a while about the different blends they offered. Sitting on the outdoor patio with the warm sun on my face and the gentle breeze, I felt completely at ease. It’s one of those places where time seems to slow down and everything just feels... right.

Casa Jaguar

Casa Jaguar is the kind of place that transports you to a magical world. The atmosphere is a perfect mix of jungle-chic with a bit of mystery. I’ll never forget the Thursday night I spent there, surrounded by the glowing lanterns, listening to live music as we enjoyed creative cocktails and dishes bursting with flavors. The energy was electric, and the night was filled with laughter and conversation. The staff was attentive, always making sure we were taken care of, and as the evening wore on, the vibe became even more lively—this is the place to be if you want to immerse yourself in the Tulum nightlife scene.

DelCielo

DelCielo became my favorite spot for brunch. This cozy café is in the heart of Tulum’s town, and it has a relaxed, inviting atmosphere that makes you want to linger. I remember sitting at a table on their charming patio, sipping a tropical smoothie and enjoying one of their delicious egg dishes. The sounds of local chatter and soft music created the perfect ambiance for a laid-back meal. The friendly staff made me feel like a regular, and I loved how the café had that neighborhood spot feel—where everyone knows your name and you feel right at home.

Burrito Amor

If you’re in the mood for something quick but delicious, Burrito Amor is the place to go. I loved the casual, no-fuss vibe—sitting on a bench wrapped in banana leaves, I was able to enjoy a healthy and filling meal without missing a beat. The waitstaff was so friendly and chatty, and I remember laughing with them about my attempts to pronounce “cochinita pibil” correctly. The music in the background was upbeat, and the whole experience felt so effortless. It’s the perfect spot for a quick, satisfying bite without the pressure of formal dining.
