Curator’s statement
Carmel-by-the-Sea is one of the few destinations where traveling with your dog feels completely effortless—not like your pet is simply allowed, but also genuinely welcomed. During a recent five-day trip with my dog, I was struck by how naturally dogs are woven into daily life here: off-leash mornings at Carmel Beach, dog-friendly patios at nearly every turn, and beautiful hikes just minutes from town. What makes Carmel particularly special is that it combines that dog-friendly culture with stunning coastal scenery, charming walkable streets, and great food and hotels. It’s one of the rare destinations where both you and your dog can have an equally memorable vacation.

Things to do in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Hiking in the Mission Trail Nature Preserve
Carmel Beach
This is the main event if you’re traveling with a dog. The beach is famously dog-friendly and allows off-leash play for well-behaved dogs, making it one of the happiest places I visited all week.
Mission Trail Nature Preserve
One of my favorite morning activities—peaceful trails with beautiful views and far fewer crowds than the beach. It feels tucked away despite being just minutes from town.
Scenic Bluff Path
This is one of the easiest and most beautiful walks in Carmel. You’ll get sweeping ocean views while your dog gets a slower-paced outing after a bigger beach day.
Garland Ranch Regional Park
If your dog needs a bigger adventure, this is worth the short drive inland. Stick to the designated dog-friendly trails and avoid horse paths.
Carmel-by-the-Sea Village
Half the fun is simply wandering town with your dog. The village is incredibly walkable, and many shops leave out water bowls or welcome dogs inside.
Stillwater Cove
A beautiful stop for coastal views and a quieter pace. It’s a great scenic detour if you’re exploring beyond downtown Carmel.
Quail Lodge Open Space
This is a great lower-key walking option if you want open space without committing to a full hike. It feels peaceful and less touristy.
Palo Corona Regional Park
One of the best options if your dog still has energy to burn. Expect wide-open trails, beautiful scenery, and plenty of space.
Places to eat & drink in Carmel-by-the-Sea

My dog enjoying Yappy Hour at Carmel Mission Inn
Terry's Lounge (at Cypress Inn)
This was one of my favorite discoveries in Carmel—a relaxed patio where dogs are genuinely welcomed, not just accommodated. Go for the burger and a cocktail after the beach, and settle in for one of the most dog-friendly atmospheres in town.
Carmel Belle
My favorite casual breakfast stop in town. I kept coming back for the breakfast sandwich and smoothie, and it’s perfectly located before a walk through town or a beach morning.
Yappy Hour at Carmel Mission Inn
One of the most fun recurring events I found in Carmel—every Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m., dogs mingle while owners grab drinks on the patio. Order the artichoke dip, and, yes, they even have a dog menu and bring out comfy dog beds!
Stationæry
A beautiful brunch or lunch option with a charming patio and another standout perk: They also offer a dog menu. It feels elevated without being stuffy.
Treehouse Cafe
Their outdoor seating makes this an easy dinner option with a dog. It feels lively without being overly formal and works well for groups.
Casanova Restaurant
One of Carmel’s classic dinner spots with a charming patio that feels perfect for a special evening without leaving your dog behind.
Flaherty's Seafood Grill & Oyster Bar
A reliable sit-down meal if you want seafood after a long day outdoors. Their patio makes bringing your dog along simple.
Alvarado Street Brewery & Bistro
A casual, easy option when you want something low-key after a busy day. Great beer, approachable food, and dog-friendly outdoor seating.
Need to know
Carmel-by-the-Sea is incredibly dog-friendly, which works because people are generally respectful of the town, trails, beaches, and wildlife. Carmel Beach allows off-leash dogs, but only if your dog has strong voice control, and many nearby trails have specific leash rules, so pay attention to posted signage.
Bring extra towels and water, and be prepared for sand, salt water, and sun after beach days. Reserve hotels and dinner spots early during busy weekends, and leave room in your schedule to wander. Some of my favorite moments were the unplanned ones: discovering quiet courtyards, stopping for a drink with my dog, and meeting locals who were just as excited about dogs as I was.
