Advisor - A Local's Guide to Aspen
Curator’s statement

I have called Aspen home for nearly three years now, and no matter where I go, the experiences I have had there will always hold a special place in my heart. As an avid skier, it is one of the best places to live in the world, but Aspen is about so much more than skiing—it is a unique community unmatched by anywhere else in the world, with a wealth of culture—from the dining, to entertainment, and year-round adventures in the surrounding Rocky Mountains. Let me be your guide, with insider knowledge, to one of the world’s most luxurious, outdoor-centered destinations.

Skiing (obviously)

In my extensive ski experience, Aspen takes the crown as the King of the Rockies. With access to four separate mountains included in one pass, each with their own distinct character, there is a wide variety of terrain for skiers of all abilities to enjoy.

The apres ski nightlife

It’s no secret that Aspen has a wild nightlife, with multiple clubs and bars in town, ranging in style from cowboy-themed Silver City to neon-lit Sterling, or relaxing by the fire in any of the sophisticated hotel lobbies Aspen has to offer. From the historic Hotel Jerome (dubbed by locals as “Aspen's living room”), to the modern yet cozy MOLLIE Aspen, this town has something to excite night owls of all tastes. Belly Up, the local concert venue, is one of my favorite places to see big name artists such as Zach Bryan, Norah Jones, The Head and the Heart, and Chainsmokers, in a intimate venue (450 people) with some of the best acoustics you will experience. There are also dozens of events happening throughout the winter, from Xgames, to Winterskol—a local favorite. As quoted in Dumb and Dumber, this little place called Aspen is truly “where beer flows like wine”.

The dining

Aspen has one of the most highly concentrated collections of world-class restaurants in the US, featuring one of two Michelin-star restaurants in Colorado, Bosq, as well as a handful of other dining experiences that will have you mistake this small mountain town for New York or Paris. From steakhouses like Monarch and 316, to sushi houses like Yuki (by Nobu), upscale Italian like Casa Tua, or a taste of France at Betula, you can’t go wrong dining in Aspen (as long as you can foot the bill).

Paddleboarding on the Roaring Fork River

This is a summer favorite for many locals—whether you prefer a relaxing float down-river, or a good workout, going up, this river is nature’s perfect way to cool down on hot summer days—just outside of town towards Independence Pass. There are plenty of shops in town to rent or buy paddleboards, featuring Aspen-based company, aptly named High Society. For more extreme rapids, there are plenty of zones Down Valley on the Roaring Fork and Colorado River for river rafters and kayakers.

Last but not least: hiking

From the world-famous Maroon Bells to Independence Pass, Aspen has a wide variety of places to hike for all abilities. Some of my favorites include the Sunnyside Trail and Ute Trail.

Places to eat & drink in Aspen, CO

Steakhouse 316

  • My personal favorite restaurant is Steakhouse 316. It has a cozy cabin atmosphere, with unbeatable quality steak, and an expert sommelier, plus an excellent bar menu.

  • The best Italian restaurant in town is Casa Tua, where you can find unbeatable pasta and wine, among other gourmet dishes, in a sophisticated alpine modern atmosphere. Centrally located in town, you can’t miss this distinct chalet-style building. There is also a beautiful back patio bar, perfect for a glass of wine with your friends on a summer afternoon.

  • Ajax Tavern is a must for the apres-ski scene. Located right at the base of the mountain, this party hub is known for passing around oversized bottles of Veuve Clicquot, but every local knows they have one of the best burgers in town, among other amazing dishes.

  • Speaking of burgers, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention another personal favorite, Clark’s Oyster Bar. Yes, burgers at an oyster bar. They also have the best seafood in town.

  • If you are looking for the local dive bar (not really a dive. It’s only half-way underground, after all), look no further than Zanes Tavern, where you are most likely to find me after a long day of skiing. Try the Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls (aka “Crack Rolls”). You’re welcome.

  • If you’re looking to go even more subterranean, head down to Buck. This is a true sports bar, with surprisingly GREAT food.

  • For a slightly more elevated bar experience, head up to Aspen Public House. With its cozy atmosphere and classic mountain decor, this watering hole is a local favorite of all ages.

  • For the best Mexican in town, go to Las Montanas. This upscale cantina has a happy hour to die for, just make sure you can make it back down the stairs after (the views are worth it).

Need to know

This is just the tip of the iceberg of the extensive list of activities that Aspen has to offer. What will you discover in this magical town?
