Things to do in Cappadocia

Knot by knot, watching a local artisan up close create a timeless piece in Cappadocia

Sunrise from a hot air balloon

Don’t skip the sunrise hot air balloon experience. It may sound touristy—it’s anything but. Watching the sun rise over the distant volcano as dozens of softly colored balloons drift and rise across Cappadocia’s muted landscape is genuinely unforgettable. It’s the kind of moment that stays with you long after you’ve left.

Visit the underground city of Ozkonak

Believed to be established around the fourth century BCE. This underground tunnel world is made of volcanic granite and was only discovered in 1972 by a local farmer. Explore the winery, livestock room, and learn about the ancient ventilation system.

Heritage rug workshop

Adventure out to a heritage workshop where rug-making has been passed down since the 1930s. Watch an artisan at her loom, knot by knot, preserving a tradition that feels both meticulous and personal.

Enter their showroom, where tea is poured and layers of carpets are unfurled in a kind of quiet theater. It’s more than shopping—it’s an intimate intro to one of the country’s most beloved crafts.

If you are lucky enough to make a deal, shake hands with your sales person and have your friends sit on your new purchase to ensure its comfort.

Places to eat & drink in Cappadocia

Crafting tik tik by hand: simple and skillful

Courtyard Bar & Lounge

Courtyard Bar & Lounge at Refined Caves Hotel offers thoughtful cocktails while sitting outdoors overlooking the caves and warming up by the fire pit. This is the perfect spot for a pre-dinner drink or warm-up night cap.

TIK TIK Kadın Emeği

The most magical, charming, and unassuming tiny restaurant ran by the local women’s cooperative. It is like stepping back in time. Watch them prepare manti with local cheese and tomato sauce seated on their uneven wooden floor. Be sure to introduce yourself to the boss lady.

Old Greek House

Unexpectedly, a spot called Old Greek House in an old family mansion was one of our favorite spots for all-natural and homemade cooking done by local women. Traditional village cooking with a mix of Turkish and Greek favorites, as well as walnut baklava!

Need to know

From its otherworldly landscapes and underground cities to deeply rooted culinary traditions, artisan craftsmanship, and unforgettable experiences like sunrise balloons and whirling dervish ceremonies, Cappadocia offers diversity that deserves more than a one-night stay.
