Where to stay

Unlock perks by contacting Elizabeth to book your trip.

Day 1: Ribeira district

Ribeira waterfront at sunset

Check into Maison Albar Le Monumental Palace, a 5-star hideaway that’s both grand and intimate. Once settled, wander down to the Ribeira district for your first glimpse of the Douro River. The colorful facades, live music, and wine bars tucked into stone arches are something else. Take a sunset stroll across the Dom Luís I Bridge, then enjoy dinner at A Cozinha do Manel or Tapabento, both perfect for a cozy first night.

Tip: Time your bridge walk for golden hour—the views are breathtaking.

Day 2: Porto history

Livraria Lello interior

Start with a pastel de nata and coffee at Majestic Café, then visit Livraria Lello and Torre dos Clérigos for a dose of Porto’s history and architecture. Spend the afternoon exploring Palácio da Bolsa and Sé Cathedral, then sneak away to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal for peaceful river views.

In the evening, enjoy a wine tasting or fado show in the old town before an intimate dinner at Muu Steakhouse.

Insider tip: Buy Livraria Lello tickets online in advance because it gets crowded.

Day 3: Douro Valley

Duoro Valley, Portugal

Trade the city buzz for the open air with a day trip to the Douro Valley, Porto’s wine country. Whether you choose a private boat cruise or a small-group tour, expect rolling vineyards, terraced hillsides, and endless port tastings. Stop for lunch at a riverside winery before returning to Porto in the evening.

Back in the city: ease into the night with dinner at A Cozinha do Manel for modern takes on northern Portuguese dishes, then head to Bonaparte Downtown for a cozy pub atmosphere or Espaço 77 for casual local energy and €1 beers. End the night with a moonlit stroll past the illuminated Clérigos Tower.

Tip: Wear light layers. Mornings in the valley can be cool even in summer.

Day 4: Porto’s seaside

Lighthouse at Foz do Douro

Spend your final morning soaking up Porto’s seaside calm. Head to Amélia Foz, where ocean air meets great coffee. Take a short stroll along the promenade to the Farolim de Felgueiras lighthouse, snap one last photo of the waves, then make your way back to Maison Albar Le Monumental Palace to check out.

Need to know

  • Bring comfortable shoes. Porto’s cobblestone streets are beautiful but steep.

  • Keep some euros on hand for taxis, trams, and small cafes.

  • Try a glass of tawny port paired with chocolate. The locals swear by it.
