Curator’s statement
Oregon is one of those places that sneaks up on you with its magic—where the coastline collides with cliffs and sea stacks, and inland volcanoes hide crystal-clear waterfalls and endless trails. This road trip was one of the most scenic and refreshing getaways I’ve taken—perfect for anyone craving a mix of coastal calm and outdoor adventure. Every stop along the way felt like a new world to explore, with enough charm, wild beauty, and incredible food to keep you wanting more.

Day 1: Arrival day

Arrive in Portland and pick up a rental car to begin the adventure. For active travelers, I recommend renting bikes from Bike the Gorge and following the scenic paths along the Columbia River to visit Multnomah Falls and other nearby waterfalls. If you’re in more of a foodie mood, spend time in downtown Portland. Have brunch at Mother’s Bistro & Bar, then stretch your legs with a hike up Mount Tabor, an extinct volcano with sweeping city views. End your night with a sunset dinner at Portland City Grill, where the views rival the food.
Day 2: Cannon Beach

Sunset at Haystack Rock is a must-see.
Spend the day at Cannon Beach, one of the most iconic beaches in the Pacific Northwest. Wander down to Haystack Rock, explore tide pools, and maybe even spot puffins. For those who love a view, Ecola State Park offers trails with coastal cliffside panoramas. For lunch or dinner, check out local favorites like Driftwood Restaurant or Wayfarer, and don’t miss the sunset from the beach—it's unforgettable.
Day 3: Oregon Coast Highway

Today’s all about the drive down the Oregon Coast Highway (101)—one of the most scenic routes in the US. Stop at Devil’s Punchbowl, hike up the dunes at Cape Kiwanda, and keep an eye out for whales in Depoe Bay. Don’t miss Drift Creek Falls, a hike with a stunning suspension bridge and waterfall. Other coastal gems include Thor’s Well, Neptune State Scenic Viewpoint, and the wild beauty of Cape Perpetua. End the day with a thrill: Try sandboarding at Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area before heading inland to Eugene for the night.
Day 4: Bend

Time to head east to the high desert of Bend, where adventure awaits. Spend the day exploring the area’s endless outdoor options: Rent bikes, go whitewater kayaking, or visit Smith Rock State Park for hiking with epic views. For something unique, check out the Newberry National Volcanic Monument or hike to Tumalo Falls. End your day with a cold beer from one of Bend’s famous craft breweries and a sunset hike to Pilot Butte.
Day 5: Salem

After a relaxed morning in Bend, take the scenic 2.5-hour drive to Salem. Use this day to catch your breath—explore downtown Salem, visit a local winery, or stroll through Bush’s Pasture Park. It’s the perfect spot to unwind before heading home.
Day 6: Drive back to Portland

Drive back to Portland International Airport (about one hour from Salem), return your rental car, and head home with unforgettable memories from the coast to the Cascades.
