Curator’s statement
My cousin and I spontaneously decided to visit Hobart, Tasmania for a girls' weekend, and it exceeded all expectations! Though we hadn't planned extensively, we knew MONA was at the top of our list. As we explored, we both fell completely in love with Hobart. As Tasmania's capital city, Hobart truly offers something for everyone — from outdoor enthusiasts to foodies, art lovers and those seeking waterfront charm. The city has an undeniably dreamy quality.

Things to do in Hobart, Tasmania

The view from the lighthouse on Bruny Island
Here are four unforgettable experiences for a perfect weekend in Hobart:
Bruny Island:
Just a short ferry ride from Hobart, Bruny Island is a natural paradise that shouldn't be missed. While organized tours are available, renting a car offers the freedom to explore at your own pace. The island's dramatic landscapes and stunning coastal views make it one of Tasmania's most spectacular destinations. For the best experience, check the weather forecast before visiting.
MONA (Museum of Old and New Art):
Take the scenic ferry ride to MONA, Australia's largest private museum and a true cultural phenomenon. This avant-garde museum houses a provocative collection of ancient and contemporary art. Plan to spend a full day here exploring the exhibitions, enjoying the on-site winery, dining at one of several restaurants and catching live performances in the grounds. The journey to MONA is part of the experience, with regular ferry services from Hobart's waterfront.
Salamanca Market:
One of Australia's most celebrated outdoor markets, Salamanca Market is a vibrant showcase of local artisans, producers and performers. Note: Check current operating hours before visiting, as market days may vary. The market offers an authentic taste of Tasmania's local culture and craftsmanship. You will find delightful coffee, pastries and snacks to enjoy as you stroll through the market.
Mount Wellington:
Rising 1,271 meters above sea level, Mount Wellington offers breathtaking panoramic views of Hobart and its surroundings. While weather conditions can be unpredictable - with fog occasionally closing the summit road - the journey itself can offer unexpected delights, such as pristine rainforest views and possible rainbow sightings (which we were lucky enough to catch!). For the best visibility, plan your visit during clear weather.
Places to eat & drink in Hobart, Tasmania

A sample platter from Bruny Island Cheese Company
I love exploring new destinations through their food and culture — that's my preferred way to travel. Hobart was a delightful surprise. Although I arrived with little knowledge about the city's attractions or dining scene, my cousin and I discovered some incredible places that I'm excited to share. This is not an exhaustive list, but these are the spots we enjoyed during our short time in Hobart and would recommend visiting.
So make some room in your belly and enjoy my top restaurant recommendations.
Blue Eyed Seafood Restaurant:
Located in Battery Point, Hobart, this restaurant serves exceptionally fresh seafood. The char-grilled octopus with lemon cream sauce is a standout dish! Their wine list features an extensive selection from Tasmania, Australia and France. For non-drinkers, they offer an impressive non-alcoholic beverage menu.Ball & Chain Grill:
Since Tasmania is known for its high-quality beef, I had to try this steakhouse during my visit. Located a short walk from the waterfront, this cozy steak and seafood spot fills up quickly — make sure to book ahead. Save room for dessert — you'll want to savor every bite before surrendering to the inevitable (and gratifying) food coma!Morilla Wine Bar:
This restaurant at the MONA is perfect for either starting or ending your museum visit. On beautiful days, choose outdoor seating to enjoy the live music is highly recommended. The impressive wine selection perfectly complements their excellent charcuterie and cheese plates.Bruny Island Cheese Company:
This establishment offers more than just cheese — you'll find beer tastings and other delicacies here. We tried their staff-selected cheese platter paired with a beer tasting flight, which made for a perfect combination.Bruny Island Winery:
Oysters and wine, anyone? What a charming, quaint find while driving to the lighthouse! I was absolutely in my happy place here and can't recommend it enough during your Bruny Island exploration. I enjoyed a half dozen Kilpatrick oysters paired with their Reserve Pinot Noir. Simply delightful!

Weather can change rapidly - pack layers and rain gear.
Most attractions are within 30 minutes of the city center.
