Things to do in Tulum, Mexico

The jungle and its sacred waters.
Explore Tulum’s cenotes
Cenotes are the heart of Tulum—cool, clear, and impossibly peaceful. Cenote Calavera is my favorite for early mornings; it feels like a secret before the crowds arrive. I love slipping into the water when the sun first hits the opening—it’s quiet in a way photos never capture. Gran Cenote is perfect if you want something more open and bright. Bring cash and go early for the softest light.
Spend a slow morning at Matcha Mama
This is one of those places that just feels good. I always stop here for a smoothie bowl after a cenote swim—the Mamita bowl with extra granola is my go‑to. Grab a swing seat if you can; it’s the perfect little pause before the day unfolds.
Wander the beach road
Tulum’s beach road is a whole mood—boutiques, cafés, and jungle‑wrapped architecture. I love walking it in the late afternoon when the sun softens and everything feels golden. Pop into boutiques like La Troupe or Caravana for beautiful, handmade pieces.
Visit the Tulum ruins
The ruins sit right above the water, and the breeze here is always perfect. I recommend going right when they open—the morning light on the cliffs is beautiful, and you’ll avoid the heat. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water; the sun gets strong quickly.
Book a beachfront massage
There’s nothing like a massage with the sound of the waves in the background. I love booking one in the late afternoon when the beach is quieter and the air feels warm and soft. It’s one of those Tulum moments that stays with you.
Enjoy a long, lazy beach day
Tulum is built for slow days. I love settling into a beachfront lounger with a book, ordering fresh ceviche, and letting the day unfold naturally. Nomade and Habitas both have beautiful beach clubs with great food and a calm, grounded vibe.
Catch sunset at a rooftop bar
Tulum sunsets hit differently—warm, hazy, and a little magical. Mateo’s has one of the best rooftop views, and I always order a margarita with tajín on the rim. Go early to grab a good spot.
Take a day trip to Sian Ka’an
If you want something off the beaten path, Sian Ka’an is worth the adventure. The water is unreal—clear, calm, and untouched. It’s a long day, but floating through the mangroves is one of the most peaceful experiences I’ve had in Tulum.
Bike around town
Biking is one of my favorite ways to get around Tulum. It’s easy, breezy, and lets you explore at your own pace. I love riding through Aldea Zama in the morning when the streets are quiet and the air is still cool.
Stargaze on the beach
Tulum nights are special—warm air, soft waves, and a sky full of stars. If you’re staying beachfront, take a late‑night walk. It’s one of the simplest but most romantic things to do here.
Places to eat & drink in Tulum, Mexico

A candlelit table by the water, wrapped in jungle quiet. This is Tulum’s magic at its softest.
Arca—jungle‑lit, sensual, unforgettable
Dinner at Arca feels like stepping into a dream with flickering candles, smoky aromas from the open‑fire kitchen, and dishes that taste as vibrant as the jungle around you. I always order whatever they’re doing with corn that season; it’s usually smoky, sweet, and unforgettable. Go after sunset when the whole space glows.
Hartwood—earthy, seasonal, iconic
Hartwood is simplicity done beautifully: wood‑fired dishes, fresh local ingredients, and a setting that feels both rustic and elevated. I love coming here on slower nights when you can really settle in. The whole fish is my go‑to. It’s tender, flavorful, and perfect for a long, soulful dinner.
Nü Tulum—elevated jungle dining
Nü blends modern Mexican cuisine with lush, candlelit surroundings that feel both chic and deeply romantic. I love this spot for couples who want something refined without losing that earthy Tulum magic. The tasting menu is a great way to experience their creativity.
Gitano—mezcal, music, and moonlit vibes
Gitano is where mezcal cocktails, disco‑jungle energy, and soft candlelight come together. I love starting the night with their “Jungle Fever” cocktail—it’s bright, smoky, and sets the tone. Come for dinner, stay for the atmosphere; it’s playful, sexy, and still elevated.
Casa Jaguar—bohemian, warm, late‑night energy
Casa Jaguar is a jungle classic. Open‑air, candlelit, and effortlessly cool. The food is fresh and flavorful, but the real magic is the ambiance, especially on nights when the back‑garden bar comes alive. I love sitting near the back where the lighting is soft and the music feels just right.
Raw Love—beachy, wellness‑forward, soulful
For a slow morning or a mid‑day reset, Raw Love is my favorite. Smoothie bowls, fresh fruit, and nourishing dishes served under palms. It’s the perfect wellness moment between beach time and exploring. The açaí bowls are cold, refreshing, and exactly what you want after a hot morning.
Posada Margherita—coastal Italian with Tulum soul
Handmade pasta, ocean breezes, and a rustic‑chic setting that feels like a love letter to slow living. I always go before sunset so I can watch the sky change while I eat. The fresh herb pasta with olive oil is simple, romantic, and perfect by the sea.
Bal Nak—modern, elevated, intimate
Bal Nak brings a refined, contemporary take on Mexican cuisine with a warm, intimate atmosphere. I love this spot for couples who want something special without the crowds. The cocktails are beautifully balanced, and the plating is always stunning.
Matcha Mama—soft, playful, Instagram‑friendly
A sweet stop for smoothies, matcha, and light bites. It’s breezy, cute, and perfect for a mid‑day break between cenotes and beach clubs. I always grab the Mamita bowl with extra granola; it’s refreshing and not too heavy.
Clan Destino — cenote‑side cocktails
A hidden gem with a cenote right in the middle. Perfect for a casual drink that still feels magical. I love coming here at golden hour when the light hits the water. It’s relaxed, fun, and very Tulum in the best way.
Need to know
Tulum moves at its own pace: slow, warm, and wonderfully unhurried. Over time, I’ve learned a few things that make the trip feel even smoother:
Bring comfortable shoes for jungle paths and cenote steps. Most of the magic here happens off paved roads. Think sandy walkways, wooden bridges, and uneven stone steps. I learned quickly that cute sandals don’t always survive a cenote day
Expect cash‑only moments. Many smaller restaurants, taxis, and beach spots still prefer pesos. I always keep some on hand so I’m not searching for an ATM when I’m sun‑tired and hungry.
Book your special dinners early. Arca, Hartwood, and Nü fill up fast especially during peak season. If there’s a place you’re excited about, reserve it early and build your evening around it.
Plan for limited cell service on the beach road. It’s part of the charm, but downloading maps, menus, and reservation details ahead of time makes life easier. I’ve had nights where Google Maps simply gave up.
Sunscreen, bug protection, and a reusable water bottle go a long way. You’ll be moving between jungle, beach, and cenotes so staying protected and hydrated keeps the days feeling good. I always pack biodegradable sunscreen for cenote days.
Respect the natural spaces. Cenotes, beaches, and jungle areas are sacred and delicate. Biodegradable sunscreen, mindful exploring, and leaving no trace help keep them beautiful for everyone.
Lean into the slow moments. Some of the best parts of Tulum aren’t planned. A long lunch, a quiet swim, a sunset that stops you mid‑conversation. The more you soften into the rhythm, the better it gets. Most of all, give yourself permission to slow down and let Tulum meet you where you are softly, warmly, and in its own beautiful rhythm.
