Advisor - Istanbul: A Local’s Lens on the City
Curator’s statement

I’ve been to Istanbul more times than I can count, definitely over ten. It’s one of those cities that just sticks with you. I’ve made friends here, found my favorite little spots, and always end up discovering something new. This is the version of Istanbul I actually know, a mix of local life and a little sightseeing.

Things to do in Istanbul, Turkey

Basilica Cistern shot by me, @gabres

Spend a day doing the classics

Visit the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque—two of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks. Women should dress modestly and cover their hair (scarves are sold just outside). Don’t miss the Basilica Cistern, an otherworldly 6th-century Byzantine underground water reservoir that once supplied the Great Palace—it’s as cinematic in person as it looks in photos.

Stroll along Bebek

Bebek feels like Istanbul’s version of New York’s West Village—set right on the Bosphorus, with chic cafés, stylish locals, and scenic waterfront walks. I love grabbing a coffee at Petra Roasting Co. and wandering through the boutiques tucked between historic buildings. It’s also where I pick up the best marzipan in all of Istanbul at Meşhur Bebek Badem Ezmesi, and just down the road, the best nuts and dried fruit at Bebek Kuruyemiş.

Shop in Nişantaşı

For shopping, Nişantaşı is the place. It’s home to international designer flagships and local Turkish labels alike. Beymen is their equivalent of Saks Fifth Avenue, while “My Best Friends Store” is a hidden-gem boutique for unique finds. For luxe furs and leathers, stop by Shaky Fur & Leather Istanbul.

Book a wellness day at Only Health

If you’re into biohacking and longevity, Only Health is next-level. They offer NAD therapy, red-light therapy, hyperbaric chambers, live blood analysis, and so much more.

Visit Melez Tea

Buy tea at my favorite tea shop in the world—Melez. Their blends are beautifully curated and incredibly potent, using high-quality botanicals. It’s the perfect spot to pick up gifts. I always buy their variety pack and stock up on my favorites.

Places to eat & drink in Istanbul, Turkey

Beyti - shot by me @ gabres

Beyti

Go to Beyti—it’s a little far, but so worth it. Whenever someone important visits Istanbul, this is where they’re taken to eat. It’s traditional, elegant, and a must for all my friends and clients. The design feels like a time capsule of old Istanbul (as seen in the photo), and if you’re traveling with a big group, you can even reserve a private dining room. Don’t leave without trying the pumpkin dessert with tahini and walnuts—it’s my favorite.

Dragon at the Bebek Hotel

Dragon—an elegant yet young and hip Chinese restaurant tucked inside the Bebek Hotel, right on the Bosphorus. After dinner, head to the hotel’s lounge for drinks or, if it’s warm out, go up to the rooftop for cocktails and live music with a view. It’s young and it’s hip.

The Peninsula Istanbul Rooftop

Get a drink at The Peninsula Rooftop—it feels like being inside a sleek yacht overlooking the water. The cocktails are exceptional, and their teas are equally beautiful if you’re skipping alcohol.

Elbet Steakhouse

Elbet is my favorite steakhouse in the city—not too fancy, just delicious and lively. It’s similar in concept to Salt Bae’s, but 10x better. Pro tip: order the beef sushi, the beef carpaccio, the salad with pomegranates, the spaghetti meat, and the fresh-cut potato crisps.

Deraliye Ottoman Palace Cuisine

The day you’re sightseeing around the historic district, stop for lunch at Deraliye Ottoman Palace Cuisine, located right by the Grand Bazaar. It’s the perfect place to try traditional Ottoman dishes after visiting Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.

Arkestra

Arkestra is a Michelin-starred spot that blends incredible food with a modern, creative edge. Before or after dinner, grab a cocktail upstairs at their “Listening Room” bar—it has the best atmosphere.

Da Mario

For a cozy Italian dinner, Da Mario is my go-to. It’s perfect for when you want a break from Turkish food but still want something special and local-feeling.

Biz Istanbul

Located inside the Atatürk Cultural Center, Biz Istanbul has one of the most beautiful views in the city. Their food is fantastic and the cocktails are equally impressive—come for sunset if you can.

Mangerie

Start your day with breakfast at Mangerie, a beloved local spot in Bebek known for its traditional Turkish breakfast and airy terrace overlooking the Bosphorus. It’s the perfect way to ease into the day with fresh cheeses, olives, simit, and Turkish tea.

Need to know

  • Get cash: Many places, especially taxis and smaller shops, don’t accept cards—so always have some Turkish lira on hand.

  • Use Uber for taxis: You can easily order taxis through the Uber app in Istanbul—it’s the most reliable way to get around without dealing with language barriers or price negotiations.

  • Avoid the tourist zones (if you can): Unless you’re only in Istanbul for a quick trip, try to spend more time in local neighborhoods like Bebek or Nişantaşı instead of the overly touristy areas around Sultanahmet.

  • Account for traffic—seriously: Istanbul traffic is worse than LA. Always build in extra time, especially if you’re crossing the Bosphorus or heading to the airport.

  • Dress respectfully when visiting mosques: Women should bring a scarf to cover their hair and wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Men should avoid shorts. Scarves are often sold outside major mosques if you forget.
