Advisor - From Craters to Coasts: 12 Days in El Salvador
Curator’s statement

El Salvador is a hidden gem in Central America, offering a vibrant mix of adventure, culture and natural beauty. From hiking active volcanoes and soaking in hot springs to exploring mural-covered towns, the country has something to inspire every type of traveler. For my family, this upcoming trip is especially meaningful — a way for my sister and father to reconnect with their Salvadoran roots, and for my two wonderful nieces to experience the richness of their heritage firsthand. More than a vacation, it’s a celebration of identity, culture and shared discovery. This itinerary is designed around my family stay in Playa San Diego, La Libertad, with four adults and two kids (ages nine and 16), traveling in late June through early July.

If you have a late arrival, we recommend staying near the airport or heading directly to Playa San Diego to get settled. Use this evening to unwind and prepare for a full itinerary.

Buy snacks or drinks at the airport before leaving, as local shops may close early.

Use this day to unwind in Playa San Diego. Enjoy the beach, eat local cuisine and stock up on groceries.

Visit the local market in La Libertad for fresh seafood and fruits.

Day 3: Santa Ana Volcano & Coatepeque Lake

Crater views from the top of Santa Ana Volcano.

Start your day early with a guided hike up Santa Ana Volcano, one of El Salvador’s most iconic natural wonders. The trail offers breathtaking views of the vibrant turquoise crater lake at the summit — well worth the effort for adventure seekers. After the hike, head to nearby Coatepeque Lake to relax and unwind by the water.

If you’d like to minimize drive time and make the most of the region, consider spending a night or two in the nearby town of Juayúa. It’s a great home base for exploring not just the volcano and lake, but also Café Albania Adventure Park and the scenic waterfalls at Los Chorros de La Calera.

A note from Viviana

Wear sturdy hiking shoes, pack plenty of water and opt for a guided tour for safety and ease.

Day 4: Relax & recover

Post-hike recovery never looked so good.

After the intense hike, take a well-deserved rest day. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, lounge at Playa San Diego or have a low-key seafood lunch in La Libertad. This is a great day to reflect, journal or plan upcoming excursions.

Head to a local beach shack for fresh ceviche or try pupusas from a roadside stand.

Day 5: El Tunco Beach & Tamanique Waterfalls

Chasing waterfalls after catching waves

Spend the morning exploring the caves and surf culture at El Tunco Beach, then head into the mountains to hike to the Tamanique Waterfalls. You'll find a series of waterfalls with pools perfect for a refreshing dip.

A note from Viviana

Check the tides before exploring beach caves and bring water shoes for slippery rocks at the falls.

Day 6: Relax & reset

Recharging with ocean views and local fare.

Another slower-paced day to relax, recharge and prep for a full-day excursion tomorrow. Great time to explore the neighborhood, cook at home or go souvenir hunting.

A note from Viviana

Use this break to do laundry or pre-pack day trip bags for the long day ahead.

Day 7: Ruta de Las Flores, Café Albania & Santa Teresa Hot Springs

Explore two of El Salvador’s most charming towns — Apaneca and Ataco — along the Ruta de Las Flores. Ride a zip-line bike at Café Albania, snap pics at the rainbow slide then soak in the natural thermal pools of Santa Teresa Hot Springs.

Advisor - Viviana Franco

A note from Viviana

Do a tour to maximize time at each stop. Bring a swimsuit and dry change of clothes for the hot springs.

Day 8: La Puerta del Diablo

Looking out over El Salvador from the Devil’s Door

Hike to one of El Salvador’s most scenic viewpoints: Puerta del Diablo, a dramatic rock formation with panoramic views of the valley. A short hike leads to “El Chulo,” a striking lookout. It’s a must-see natural wonder.

A note from Viviana

Arrive early to avoid crowds. Wear hiking shoes and bring small bills for parking and snacks.

Day 9: San Salvador city tour & El Boquerón Park

Dive into the capital’s culture with a visit to its historic downtown, including the National Palace, Iglesia El Rosario and Catedral Metropolitana. Later, head up to El Boquerón to peer into a volcano crater and ride the original rainbow slide at Picnic Steak House.

Advisor - Viviana Franco

A note from Viviana

Wear modest clothes for churches and bring sunscreen for Boquerón's exposed crater rim.

Day 10: Sunset Park or explore more of Ruta de Las Flores

Playground meets Pacific.

Either relax with fun rides at Sunset Park in La Libertad or revisit any missed stops along the Ruta de Las Flores. Sunset Park offers family-friendly rides right on the waterfront, while a return trip north gives another chance to dive deeper into artisan towns.

A note from Viviana

Go in the late afternoon to catch the Ferris wheel at golden hour.

Day 11: Wind down

Bittersweet final moments in paradise.

Use your final full day to rest, pack and enjoy the beach. Grab one last seafood dinner and savor a slow-paced farewell to El Salvador.

Do some last-minute shopping at artisan markets or schedule a beach massage.

Day 12: Departure

¡Hasta pronto, El Salvador!

Head to the airport for your departure. Be sure to leave early to allow for traffic and airport security. Reflect on an unforgettable trip filled with volcanoes, murals, beaches and culture.
