The Caribbean coast of Colombia holds a special place in my heart for its perfect fusion of natural beauty, history and culture, and what’s more, it happens to be my second home, which I’m beyond grateful for! From the ancient charm of Santa Marta to the pristine beaches of Tayrona National Park and the colonial elegance of Cartagena, this region is a paradise if you’re looking for diverse experiences that feed your soul! Whether you’re trekking through lush jungles, relaxing on sun-kissed sands or wandering through historic streets, every moment feels like an adventure. This guide is my invitation to experience the magic of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, a place that keeps drawing me back with its warmth, endless wonders and delicious food.

Santa Marta: "La Perla del Caribe"
Santa Marta, one of the oldest cities in South America, serves as the perfect starting point for exploring the Caribbean coast. Known for its beautiful beaches, bustling local life and proximity to natural wonders, this charming city along the Caribbean offers a blend of relaxation and adventure.
Centro Histórico: Wander through Santa Marta’s colonial heart, where cobblestone streets and historic landmarks like the Catedral de Santa Marta offer a glimpse into the city’s rich past.
Parque de los Novios: This lively park is a hub for locals and tourists alike, with great options for dining, drinking and people-watching. In the evening, it comes alive with music and street performances.
Taganga: A favorite for both locals and backpackers alike and known for its laid-back vibe and stunning sunsets, Taganga offers some of the best snorkeling and diving opportunities along the Caribbean coast. The neighborhood's relaxed beach scene and proximity to Tayrona National Park make it an ideal spot for those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path experience. Whether you're diving in the vibrant coral reefs or enjoying fresh seafood at a beachfront café, Taganga makes for a worthwhile stop on your Carribbean coast adventure.
Minca: Escape to the tranquil mountain village of Minca, which is the first town in the Sierra Nevada. Here you can explore coffee farms, hike to waterfalls like Pozo Azul and immerse yourself in the serene, untouched jungle. A non-negotiable worth mentioning is packing in the best mosquito repellant you can get your hands on!
Tayrona National Park
Just a short drive from Santa Marta, Tayrona National Park is a haven for nature lovers that is made up of both beaches and dense jungle. This protected area is home to diverse wildlife and ancient archaeological sites.
Cabo San Juan: One of the park’s most famous beaches, Cabo San Juan offers a stunning combination of turquoise waters and lush jungle. After a scenic hike through the forest, you'll arrive at this serene spot where you can relax, swim or hike to the viewpoint for panoramic coastal views.
Pueblito Chairama: Explore this ancient indigenous village hidden in the jungle, and discover stone pathways and terraces used by the indigenous people of this region centuries ago.
Palomino
A hidden gem along Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Palomino offers a laid-back vibe with stunning beaches and a backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, Palomino is perfect for surfing or simply unwinding on the beach. One of the must-do activities here is tubing down the Palomino River, which flows through lush jungle before reaching the sea. The town’s growing bohemian charm makes it a great spot for travelers looking for a peaceful escape. Cartagena: "La Heroica"
Cartagena's allure lies in Old Town, also known as the Walled City (Ciudad Amurallada), where centuries-old history meets modern luxury.
The Walled City: Step inside the Walled City, where colorful colonial architecture and cobblestone streets create a postcard-perfect scene. Highlights include the Clock Tower, Plaza Santo Domingo and the Palace of the Inquisition.
Getsemaní: Getsemaní is Cartagena’s most vibrant neighborhood, known for its colorful street art, lively plazas and a rich blend of local culture, offering a more bohemian and authentic experience beyond the walled city.
Castillo San Felipe de Barajas: this impressive fortress, perched on a hill overlooking Cartagena, is the largest colonial fort in South America. A visit to Castillo San Felipe offers a fascinating journey through its tunnels, and breathtaking panoramic views of the city, making it a must-stop for history lovers and photographers alike.
Convento de la Popa: visit this historic convent, which is also located on a hill for panoramic views of Cartagena. The viewpoint offers a great way to appreciate the city’s beautiful skyline and coastline.
Rosario Islands: Just a short boat ride from Cartagena, these islands are a tropical haven for snorkeling, swimming and unwinding on white sandy beaches. The crystal-clear waters and coral reefs are perfect for a relaxing escape. If you don’t have the time to stay on these islands, you can do a day trip which includes Cholon, a party stop that offers a totally unique experience!
